    Tennis: Hoffmann builds for future

    Momentum played a big role in the CIF singles division title match at the 115th annual Ojai Tennis Tournament on Saturday. Corona del Mar High junior Bjorn Hoffmann didn't have it in the first set, found it early in the second set but lost it again on an overcast and sometimes drizzly afternoon at Libbey Park.

    The UCLA men's tennis team may have won the past two Pacific-12 Conference team championships at the Ojai Tennis Tournament, but defending NCAA Division I champion USC once again hammered home the fact that this is a different year. USC secured the early doubles point and tamed the Bruins throughout in a decisive 4-1 victory at Libbey Park on Friday.

    Harvard-Westlake senior Michael Genender cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Leo Hibi of Woodbridge on the second day of the 115th Ojai Tennis Tournament. Genender, committed to attend and play tennis at Stanford, lost last year's CIF final to Austin Rapp in three sets - his only high school defeat last year - before avenging that defeat against Rapp in the 2014 CIF-Southern Section Individual final.

Not only will it serve as an opportunity to raise awareness for cancer, the Glendale softball team will have a chance to honor longtime volunteer assistant coach Bob DeGooyer, who died from mesothelioma last May. “The girls were excited about this game,” Glendale coach Greg Martin said.

    Lacrosse section championships aftermath: simmering ...

    As a sports fan, it's always fun to enjoy your team's run to the playoffs, and then it's always sort of a bummer when the coverage just simply stops a day or two after the playoffs are over. I wished my team's beat writer would keep writing articles about the team just for another week or so, because after following those teams with increasing enthusiasm day after day, it was frustrating to see the coverage of my team disappear, as if all of them had abruptly fallen off of a cliff.
