    Oakmont boys stun Lunenburg with late comeback

    The Oakmont Regional boys' basketball team only led for the first minute of the game, and then trailed the rest of the way until 59 seconds left. Spurred by lock-down defense and some timely shooting and free throws, the Spartans closed out the game against rival Lunenburg on a 20-4 run, and held off the Blue Knights -- who attempted a couple of nail-biting 3-pointers in the end -- for a 55-52 win in the season opener for both teams.

    Oakmont girls defeat Lunenburg in opener

    What a way for the Oakmont Regional girls' basketball team and senior sniper Erika Hall to open up the 2016-17 winter season. Hall pumped in a game-high 24 points, as Oakmont withstood a late-game charge by host Lunenburg High and pulled away for a 57-44 victory Friday night in the opener for both teams in the newly christened Lunenburg High gymnasium on Richard A. Stachowicz Court.

    Lunenburg opens basketball season in new gym

    The glistening hardwood, a new scoreboard with no burnt-out bulbs, fresh paint on the walls and a fresh smell in the air -- the Lunenburg High girls' basketball team was a little in awe of its new gymnasium in Friday night's season opener. "The facility is fantastic; it's a great place," Lunenburg coach Frank Greene said.

    The Lunenburg football team has played some pretty good opponents -- including Oakmont Regional, Littleton and Maynard -- this fall, but the Blue Knights will have an incredibly tall task when they travel to Barre to take on explosive Quabbin Regional in their second Thanksgiving Eve meeting at Alumni Field. The Blue Knights enter Wednesday's contest at 3-7, winning each of their last three games.
