    Midland Valley was locked in a slugfest with Wilson Wednesday in round three of the Class AAA playoffs. With potential future playoff dates promising more of the same, it was only fitting that the Mustangs' champion boxer returned to action.

    Prior to the start of the 2014-15 high school basketball season, most Lowcountry observers felt the area would send a local team to the Class AAAA Lower State final this season. However, the big money was on defending state champion Wando making a repeat trip to Florence.

    Goose Creek tops Summerville to reach Class AAA Lowe...

    Anyone who thought high school girls don't play basketball at a high level of intensity should have witnessed the area's top two teams - Goose Creek and Summerville - compete for a spot in the Class AAAA Lower State finals on Monday night. The game was played hard and physical at times by both sides, and in the end, Goose Creek came away with a 68-55 win.

    Tuesday School Closings

    With freezing temperatures in the forecast, schools across the Lowcountry are meeting to determine if they will operate or close down. The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and VA's clinics in Hinesville, Beaufort, Savannah and Myrtle Beach, and the Trident Annex will operate under normal conditions on Tuesday.

    Mustangs shine in fourth quarter to advance

    Daniel Carr didn't know he earned all-state honors until the public address announcer called his name while introducing the starting lineups for the Class AAA second round playoff game with Crestwood. With his team down 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter, Carr reminded the Midland Valley fans - and let those clad in purple and black cheering for the visitors know - why he earned the honor.

    Stags advance with playoff win over Marlboro County

    Overcoming a sluggish start, especially at the line, the Berkeley Stags caught fire in the second half and won the game going away at the line, downing Marlboro County 46-41 in the opening round of the Class AAA playoffs. The Stags took the lead in a see-saw battle midway through the third quarter on a Peyton Thompson steal and a free throw, 36-35, and again on a Thompson steal with just over four minutes to play that sent Berkeley to the line to ice the win.

    Goose Creek girls eliminate West Florence, 59-46

    The Goose Creek girls basketball team advanced to the AAAA lower state semifinals Friday night, knocking off West Florence, 59-46. Goose Creek, which opened the playoffs with a win over Blythewood on Tuesday, needs two more victories to reach the AAAA state finals on March 7. Goose Creek, now 20-6 on the season, will host Summerville, a 58-46 winner over White Knoll, on Monday night.

    The season came to an end for the Aiken High School girls' basketball team Thursday night. The Lady Hornets played one of their best games of the season in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs, but it wasn't enough to knock off Crestwood.
