    Mercyhurst Prep, Fairview post girls tennis wins

    Nicole Freeman and Audrey Bell won in straight sets in singles and Mercyhurst Prep swept the doubles matches en route to a 4-1 victory over McDowell in Region 2 girls tennis at McDowell on Tuesday. The Trojans' Lauren Fadden won at first singles when Caitlyn Schultz retired with an injury, but it was all Lakers in the other matches.

    National offensive line award named after Joe Moore

    A new college football award will be given to the nation's best offensive line and honor the memory of Erie coaching great Joe Moore, who coached 52 players who went on to the NFL during his time at Pittsburgh, Temple and Notre Dame. The Joe Moore Award for the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit will be presented at the end of December and voted on only by those who have coached or played offensive line.

    District 10 champions to face off in football scrimmage

    The area high school football scrimmage schedule will include a matchup of defending District 10 champions for the second straight week. The scrimmage potentially could feature the reigning District 10 Player of the Year, Conneaut quarterback Hunter Merritt, facing off against the Erie Times-News Preseason Player of the Year, Hickory safety Andrew Pryts.

    Fairview hires Flaherty as boys coach

    Pat Flaherty spent the last five basketball seasons as an assistant to Penn State Behrend men's coach Dave Niland. At some point, though, the most successful coach in the history of the Mercyhurst Prep boys basketball knew he'd get involved again with the former.

    In Oil City, a replica of the Drake Well spouts simulated oil every time the Oilers score on their home turf, aptly called The Oil Field. In Titusville, the sight of a large metal rocket greets fans as they approach John J. Carter Stadium, which still radiates an old-school western Pennsylvania football vibe.
