    Friday's District 10 boys basketball highlights, Feb. 5

    Gette broke the tie with a free throw with 2 minutes, 30 seconds to go in the second overtime and then added a pair of free throws with 5 seconds to play. Fred Gillespie's halfcourt shot at the buzzer was no good, enabling the Tigers to escape with the victory.

    While Gannon had three Prep graduates on its 2015 roster, including starting wide receiver Brendan Klemensic, and Mercyhurst has former Ramblers linebacker Jake Plonski, rosters for the past four seasons on the football page of Edinboro's athletics website don't list a single Prep player. First-year head coach Justin Lustig's first recruiting class includes Erie Times-News District 10 Player of the Year Ta'Nauz Gregory, who helped the Ramblers to this year's PIAA Class AAA championship game, along with Gregory's teammates, receiver Dajon Heidelberg and lineman Jose Casiano.

    PIAA, District 10 administrators make bold moves

    It was Oct. 8 at Mechanicsburg, where the PIAA is headquartered, that its board of directors officially voted to expand from four to six football classes starting this fall. The state had held four championship games every year since its inaugural tournament in 1988.

    Varsity Team of the Week: Strong Vincent boys basket...

    Morris scored in a manner rarely seen on District 10 courts when the Colonels won 70-57 at Cathedral Prep on Jan. 26. The junior bolted through Prep's lane for a tomahawk dunk late in the third quarter. It was the zenith of the 31 points he scored before more than 1,600 fans at Prep's new Joann Mullen Gymnasium.

    Area football players commit to colleges

    Coles confirmed his commitment to Cornell as hundreds of athletes around the country signed letters of intent Wednesday to open the latest signing period in college sports. "It's exciting, and it's a lot of hard work over four years paying off," Coles said.

    Edinboro's Lustig signs first 9 recruits

    Among the signees were Cathedral Prep graduates Ta'Nauz Gregory and Dajon Heidelberg, West Middlesex lineman Josh Porterfield and Sharon quarterback Andrew Tomko. Lustig, who was hired as Edinboro's coach Jan. 11, also signed three players from New York, one from Ohio and a fifth from Pennsylvania to begin his first recruiting class.

    Warren swimmers earn wins over Strong Vincent, Central

    The Warren swim teams continued their strong run of late, sweeping Central and Strong Vincent Monday in tri-meet action. The girls had no trouble with wins of 118-30 and 117-47 , while the boys beat SV 97-63 and Central 116-21.
