    Dundee-Crown spoils Mason's debut at Elgin

    The Chargers established a punishing ground attack behind a much improved offensive line that is anchored by 310-pound senior right tackle Josh Mosley as they racked up 335 yards rushing en route to a 36-13 nonconference win. The running back tandem of Greg Williams and Patrick Sprouse each surpassed the 100-yard mark.

    Boys soccer: Elgin shuts out South Elgin

    Jonathan Ramirez's goal off a PK deflection helped Elgin defeat South Elgin 1-0 Thursday in Upstate Eight crossover boys soccer action. Keeper Martin Jimenez Estrada made 9 saves in the shutout for the Maroons .

    Boys soccer: Fox Valley roundup Wednesday, Aug. 26

    Hampshire 2, Marian Central 1: Tyler Koppie scored the go-ahead goal in the second half on an assist from Chip Piazza as the Whip-Purs won in nonconference action. Jose Cruz scored off an assist from Koppie in the first half and Jason Polletta had 6 saves in goal for Hampshire.

    St. Edward not as deep, but still talented

    Playing against unfamiliar opponents in the newly formed Metro Suburban Conference's East Division, the Green Wave rolled to an undefeated title and a 10-1 record, thanks to a talented roster that went two-deep at several positions. That group is "replaced" by an incoming junior class of only five football players.

    Teonic says Larkin will be improved

    Following an 0-9 season in which the Royals started as many as eight sophomores in a given week, the second-year coach said the program is poised to return to respectability. "We're definitely better than last year," said the charismatic Teonic, the former Harper College coach who transformed Hersey from a 1-8 team in 2009 to a playoff team in 2013.

    New coach Mason liking what he sees at Elgin

    On the north end of town, the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway I-90 remains a patchwork of shifting lanes during a rebuilding and widening project scheduled for completion in 2016. On the south end of town, the new $44 million U.S. Route 20 interchange at McLean Blvd. inches toward completion this fall.

    MSC East teams ready to challenge St. Edward

    In 2014, St. Edward was the only team from the nascent six-school Metro Suburban Conference East Division to qualify for the state playoffs. A year later, the defending division champion Green Wave will encounter teams that feel they've taken another step in the right direction.
