Cary-Grove defensive linemen Nick Cruz couldn't tell you who caused the hit that forced a fumble deep in Trojan territory with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter of the Trojans' win over Prairie Ridge Friday in Cary. But what he could say on the play besides the fact he fell on the ball to preserve a 21-14 nonconference victory was that even though the Trojans lost 9 full-time starters from their Class 7A runner-up team last season, their defense that posed serious question marks prior to the season opener was alive and well. Comment?

Down by 4 points with seven seconds left, Oswego quarterback Steven Frank threw a Hail Mary that came up short -- but Batavia was flagged for a face mask which awarded the Panthers an untimed play from the Batavia 24-yard line. Crystal Lake South was one of the best football teams in the state to not make the playoffs in 2014. The Gators finished 4-5 against a schedule that included seven teams with winning records, five of which qualified for the playoffs. Comment?

During that time on Rocket Hill, Maisto formed the idea that someday she'd like to be the head softball coach at her alma mater. Burlington Central athletic director Steve Diversey announced Wednesday that Maisto will take over the Rockets' program, replacing Kyle Molik who resigned after one season and is now teaching in Oswego. Comment?

It didn't spiral past Auntie Em or a flying cow while on its vertical course, but a lineman chute landed on top of Grayslake Central's field house when that tornado touched down this month. As if finishing 0-9 last year wasn't rough enough, the Rams and the entire Grayslake community faced real-life adversity following the Aug. 2 tornado that swirled through town and other parts of central Lake County. Comment?
