    Jake Barson had a steely, confident look atop the starting block seconds before hitting the pool in the 100-yard breaststroke at Friday's boys swimming and diving state championships. Barson broke his own school record in winning his preliminary heat en route to placing fourth overall and advancing to Saturday's championship finals at New Trier.

    Barson raises the bar at Rolling Meadows

    Jake Barson is the best swimmer Monika Chiappetta has coached in her 17 years on the job at Rolling Meadows. A state point-scorer last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion in the same event and now, after a victory last weekend at Glenbrook North, a sectional champ as well.

    It will have the usual look and feel, but there will also plenty new about the Mid-Suburban League boys basketball championship game on Wednesday. Barrington and Hersey square off at 7:30 p.m. at Hersey in Arlington Heights to determine the overall conference champion.

    Bartlett's Lee, Cary-Grove's Langanis headed to state

    While they swam well throughout Saturday's St. Charles East boys swimming sectional, the Bartlett-Streamwood co-op was unable to get a swimmer qualified until the final individual event. Then senior Matt Lee swam a solid 100-yard breaststroke, finished second, beat the state qualifying time and earned his second consecutive trip to the state finals.

    Barrington finds winning rhythm in West finale

    With his team leading by just one point headed into the fourth quarter, Rapolas Ivanauskas came up with his best quarter of basketball this season to lead Barrington past Schaumburg 53-43. Despite being in foul trouble, Ivanauskas stepped up his play on both ends of the court.

    Wheeling overcomes 35 from Maine West's Acevedo

    Wheeling junior forward Dylan Draka scored 21 points and teammate Jalen Dennis had 14, including a floater in the lane as time ran out to send Tuesday's nonconference boys basketball matchup against visiting Wheeling into overtime. Wheeling needed big scoring efforts to offset a season- and career-high scoring performance by Maine West senior guard Matt Acevedo.
