    A Thorne on Metea Valley's side

    After his first victory Metea Valley sophomore quarterback Payton Thorne earned a hug from a man who won plenty, his grandfather, John Thorne. The retired Wheaton Warrenville South and North Central College coach beamed after his grandson led the Mustangs to a 36-7 DuPage Valley Conference victory over Wheaton North in Aurora.

    Boys soccer: St. Charles North holds off Metea Valley

    It may not have been the prettiest second half but St. Charles North's boys soccer team withstood a late challenge by Metea Valley Tuesday night. Junior keeper Piercarlo Ricossa stonewalled Metea Valley's Michael Lothridge from point-blank range off a free kick from Ryan Barry with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to preserve the North Stars' 1-0 triumph during the second round of the PepsiCo Showdown in St. Charles.

    Boys soccer: St. Charles East trips up Batavia

    Justin Stepien had 2 goals to lead St. Charles East to a 4-1 Upstate Eight River boys soccer win over Batavia Tuesday. Dundee-Crown 2, Hampshire 0: Behind Jeremy Jareckyj and Gerardo Estrada, the Chargers were victors in Fox Valley Conference action.

    Boys soccer: Burlington Central wins PepsiCo opener

    Jack Shramme's first half goal was all Burlington Central's boys soccer team needed Saturday to earn a 1-0 win over UNO Charter School of Chicago in the opening round of the PepsiCo Showdown at Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora. Victor Rodriguez assisted on the goal for the Rockets , who got a combined 7 saves in goal from David Murphy and Ryan Parson to preserve the shutout.

    Three weeks into the season with both teams facing what could be a devastating third loss, it was not too early to call Friday's game a "must-win" for Metea Valley and Naperville Central. "It was a must-win for us," said Naperville Central quarterback Patrick Ryan.

    There was also the dustup of 204 Friday night at Dick Kerner Stadium in Aurora. Late in the first half Waubonsie quarterback Tanner Westwood scrambled into the Neuqua sideline and a skirmish ensued.

    Boys soccer: Streamwood storms back to deny South Elgin

    Streamwood boys soccer coach Matt Polovin had a feeling his team would get back in the game after falling behind South Elgin 2-0 midway through the first half Thursday afternoon. That disappointment quickly turned as the Sabres cut the deficit in half on a goal by sophomore Alex Chavez before adding 3 unanswered second-half goals on their way to a 4-2 Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory over the Storm at Millennium Field.

    Boys soccer: Benet's Kelly changes the conversation

    The senior spoke about his success being more about finding himself in the right place at the right time than anything else, but he was the one who delivered two goals in the first half of Benet's 4-0 boys soccer victory over Waubonsie Valley in nonconference play. Rather than embellish upon what he did to stake the Redwings to the cushion at halftime, he praised sophomore teammate Franklin Rutkowski.
