    Volleyball: Jefferson beats Hebron, Prince Ave.

    The Jefferson volleyball team ran its record to 18-4 with straight-set victories over Hebron Christian Academy and Prince Avenue Christian School Tuesday in Athens. The Dragons beat defending Class A champion Hebron 25-19, 25-21 and topped host Prince Avenue 25-21, 25-17.

    Apalachee softball drops games to Loganville, Heritage

    Apalachee's girls' softball team faced two of the best teams in Region 8-AAAAA in recent games, and the results were not favorable for the defending region champions. The Lady Wildcats took on Loganville in a makeup of an earlier rained-out game on Wednesday at the Apalachee field and came away with a 9-1 loss in six innings in a rematch of last season's region championship game.

    At Cedar Shoals, the Clarke Central volleyball team improved to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA Tuesday with victories over Heritage-Conyers and Cedar Shoals . The Gladiators were led by Fredricka Sheats , SeQueena Baldwin , Kira McIntyre and Lauryn Waters .

    Cedar Shoals was hoping to win its first football game since 2013 on Friday night. It would have been made much easier if the Jaguars were't facing the top football prospect in Georgia - Elbert County's Mecole Hardman.

    Colby Wood, Jefferson: Wood rushed for 260 yards and three touchdowns in the Dragons' 19-7 win over Rabun County Friday. Will Corry, Payton Bowles Athens Academy: Corry scored two rushing touchdowns and hauled in a scoring pass from Drew Richardson in the Spartans' 49-0 rout of Glascock County on Friday.

    Cross Country: Eagle runners 'faster than ever' foll...

    The Eagle boys were seconds away from winning the AAA state championship, while individually, East Jackson's Chase Kennedy, Chandler Kennedy and Noah Hulett took three of the top four spots at the state meet. Sue Anne Moralis qualified for the girls' state meet individually, placing sixth among AAA runners.

    Heading into this season, the Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines are hoping to get off to a better start than last year when they lost two of their first four games, including a loss to Region 8-A foe Athens Christian. "The best scenario for us is we stay injury free and we get off to a better start than we did last year," said head coach Jeff Herron.

    Winder-Barrow coach Heath Webb would like to see the Bulldoggs build on their 6-5 finish and playoff berth from last season, especially since the Bulldoggs are entering their second season in Webb's system. With a handful of starters returning, including running back CeCe Green, a playoff slot isn't out of reach for the Bulldoggs, If they can reach the playoffs this season, it will be the first time the Bulldoggs have nabbed back-to-back postseason spots since ending a six-year postseason streak in 1993.
