    No. 1 Allen whips Wildcats

    After last season's opening game against top-ranked Allen proved to be a coming-out party for Guyer quarterback Shawn Robinson, the 2015 edition proved to be the same for an experience-rich Allen defense and the Eagles' new man under center. Robinson was unable to get in a rhythm due to a ferocious Allen defensive front seven, and the Eagles got a big game from junior quarterback Mitchell Jonke to roll to a 48-16 win against Guyer and extend their winning streak to 44 games, the longest active streak in Texas.

    Marshall set to be in the mix for 5A-23 title

    Ridge Point and Elkins-the top two teams in 5A-23 last season-received some well-deserve credit during the 2014, but Marshall was hardly a distant third behind the two leaders. The Buffaloes, who finished 7-4 last season, lost a defensive showdown to Ridge Point, 13-0, and took Elkins to overtime, before falling, 42-35.

    Ridge Point revs up for another run

    Ridge Point graduated all but six starters from that team, but Panthers head coach Brett Sniffin isn't worried, and neither are the pundits. Dave Campbell's Texas Football has Ridge Point ranked 14th in the preseason 5A state poll, and it also picked them to repeat as 5A-23 champions.

    Hightower has lofty expectations in 2015

    Hightower High head football coach Padriac McGinnis was an assistant on the 2008 and 2011 Hurricane teams that finished second in the UIL State Tournament. McGinnis, entering his fourth season as head coach, is confident that the Hurricanes are due for another trip to the state championship game.
