    South River swims to sweep

    Excitement has been swirling around the South River swim teams all season as the Seahawks built toward the postseason meets and an expectation that if they swam their best, both squads would be hard to beat.. The Seahawks swept the 200-yard individual medley relay to start the day, swept the 200 freestyle relay to build a cushion and finished with a sweep of the 400 relay to cruise to a sweep of the Anne Arundel County team championships.

    For three county athletes and a coach, last week's postponements due to the blizzard put their career milestones on hold. Though Severn's Maddie McDaniel is headed to James Madison University to play lacrosse, she's not a bad basketball player either.

    Reynolds to receive Rubino Silver Helmet from Touchd...

    Roger Staubach and Keenan Reynolds, the two greatest quarterbacks in the history of the Naval Academy, pose in the locker room after Reynolds broke the NCAA rushing touchdown record in Navy's 55-14 victory over SMU. Navy is 8-1 for the first time since 1963, which is the year Staubach won the Heisman Trophy.

    Private school teams entering final week of regular ...

    As some of the public school basketball teams were on the court Monday for the first time in more than two weeks, the private school teams were able to get some games in late last week. As they enter the final week of the regular season, teams are jockeying for playoff positioning in hopes of producing boys and girls champions from the county for a fourth straight year.

    St. Mary's repeats as B Conference champ

    Since the inception of the the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland, either Notre Dame Prep or McDonogh has claimed A Conference swimming titles. The 2016 championship meet was no exception Sunday as the host McDonogh Eagles prevailed, 473 - 443, over the two - time defending champion Blazers in Owings Mills.

    Sports Comment: Former players, colleagues remember ...

    Helping my colleague Ed Lee from the Baltimore Sun put together the obituary story for lacrosse coaching legend Clayton "Buddy" Beardmore was an enlightening experience. Listening to so many men I've come to know and respect speak passionately and reverently about Beardmore made it clear he was a true giant of the game.

    Maryland soccer advances in NCAA tournament with 1-0...

    Eryk Williamson scored his fifth goal in as many games to lift the 10th-seeded Maryland men's soccer team over visiting Virginia , 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday night. Williamson scored in the 38th minute after collecting a free kick from Mael Corboz , who added his team-leading 10th assist.
