    Springfield district officials report facility upgrades

    During the Aug. 25 Board of Education meeting, district officials reported on those improvements and discussed plans and programs for this year at the meeting. In addition, Athlete Director Kevin Vaughn said the visitor concession stand at the stadium has been updated and now has restrooms available for use.

    Archbishop Hoban senior linebacker Jack Griffith's touchdown return off a deflected Canton McKinley punt in the first quarter highlighted a brilliant opening-night performance for the Knights, who went on to defeat the visiting Bulldogs, 49-0, on Thursday at Dowed Field. Hoban got two rushing touchdowns and 91 yards from junior Ohio State commit Todd Sibley and a pair of Danny Clark-to- Jonah Morris TD passes as it built a 28-0 halftime lead in the nonleague game.

    Copley father-son team defend Akron Open doubles title

    MERRIMAN VALLEY/ELLET - More than 200 tennis players battled for championships in 14 divisions during the 11th annual Akron Open Championships played July 23-26 at Towpath Tennis Center in Merriman Valley and Hyre Park in Ellet. In the Men's Open Doubles final, Copley father-son team Greg Aten, tennis director at Chagrin Valley Athletic Club and assistant boys tennis coach at Copley High School , and Gavin Aten, first singles player for the CHS boys tennis team this past spring, defeated 2014 CHS graduate and current Duquesne University tennis player Andrew Ong and his partner, Joey Thomas, of Jackson, 6-4, 7-5.
