Once Abused, College Women Susceptible to More Attacks

Even before the Rice incident became a huge national story, Dr. Kathleen Parks of the University of Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions conducted a five-year study on coeds who were physically or sexually abused and whether the experience caused them to drink more and as a result, increased their risk of future abuse. Parks said that of the nearly one thousand college-aged women who suffered intimate partner violence, many were victimized the next year and often turned to alcohol as a way to cope.

New domestic violence orders to keep victims safe

These are given when there is not enough evidence to charge a suspect but where there are still serious concerns about the safety of residents. The orders give police the power to force suspects to leave the property where the alleged violence occured and prevent them entering again or having any contact with the alleged victim for up to 28 days.

The Ray Rice domestic violence situation has been discussed at lengths and it is interesting to see the angles and sides people have taken when dissecting this issue. One disheartening observation I have seen repeated over and over again is how little sympathy and support has been shown towards his wife Janay Rice.

Confusion over when to release names in domestic violence

When a Rhode Island woman was arrested by the Tyngsboro police late last month in an alleged domestic-related stabbing, police were unsure under the new domestic-violence laws if they were allowed to release the name of the alleged stabber. Tyngsboro Police Chief Richard Howe told The Sun his initial interpretation of the law was that the Aug. 18 arrest of Michelle Smith, 48, of Providence, accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the shoulder with a knife, should be public.
