Because it's a frikkin' soda! Coke's a brand name, and pop sounds like slang spewed from the mouth of a moron.

It's a survey MORON ! Soda POP is a term of expressive "Americana" to describe a type of soft drink , before Pepsi & Coka Cola were interchanged with the description of a soda pop. & by the way frikkin isnt a word, but rather a slang term for those most familiar with backwoods, & hollers of Kentucky, & West Virginia, not familiar wirh proper ENGLISH !

Coke has become a generic term for any carbonated soft drink. We went on "Coke dates" when I was a teenager, but my date usually ordered a Dr. Pepper. A "soda date" or a "pop date" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Gosh, you're one educated individual!
This is the whole point, no one is perfect. There are many undereducated people here. Sometimes education is the reason for people who live poorly though. Sometimes it is the curse. For example: my mother who is very educated fell on hard times. The economy crashed, no job to be found other than minimum wage. So she goes to lowes bc food has to be put on the table. She is told she is over qualified and cant have the job bc they would have to pay her more. So she went through years of education just for the economy to crash and not have a job, and be too educated for a minimum wage job.

My husband who quit college to work in the coal mines now is making 6 figures. He has no degree, we bought our first house (not trailer, not trying to dis on the trailers but just saying) when we were 18 and is paid off. Newer vehicles which only 1 has payments on and in 1.5 years will be paid off if not sooner. My neighbor has fallen on hard times as well, spent 6 years in college just to work in the coal mines to make ends meet. He was denied for welfare bc he has never been in the system.

Local slang makes an area unique. Every area has local slangs and accents. I do not find where this makes any one person ignorant or stupid or undereducated. What I do find from 35 states I have visted is ignorant people make up the marjority of all towns and states not based on their accents, its seems to be a similarity of lifestyle that makes them this way.

The hardworking in this region are desperate to get our childern out of the area. We as parents must make a decsion though. All of America overall is out of work or working for very low wages. Coal mines and nursing pays very well here, usually bringing 6 figures. So do we move and live improverished or do we make the best of our surroundings and shelter our childern from the jerks and raise them the right way? I believe in hard work, and DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE POLITICALLY CORRECT WAY TO RAISE A CHILD! I believe in the morally correct way. I show my childern the area and the ones who have chosen to become worthless and we show them hard work will get you far in life. My husband talks with a very heavy local accent and still has a well paying job with very good paid benefits. My husband who was a 4.0 in college knows proper english, he just chooses to speak locally like anyone else would do in their local area. I speak locally. My mother who is from Virginia has also picked up the local dialect. This does make us "un exposed to proper english". Its just the way we choose to speak.

I have a deep east Texas drawl and I use the local idioms just like everyone else. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about not knowing the definitions of words and how to use them or spell them. And your mother is not poor because she has an education. That is ridiculous.

What I am saying is people sometimes go to college get an education, and become over qualified for many basic jobs. When an economy crashes, most jobs go. She was over qualified, and that means they would have to pay her more and they wouldnt do that. She wasnt asking for a higher pay either. She was needing a job. My mom has a great job now. She isnt poor. The point I was getting at with you was no one is perfect, and that was what i was trying to get across to the person who i was orignially talking too. By the way, you arent suppose to use the word "and" to start a sentence. you should have used a comma followed by a lower case "a" in the word "and", or you could have just started another sentence.:) See no ones perfect.

Stop correcting what you perceive to be my errors. I promise, you won't win that battle. It is perfectly legitimate to start a sentence with "and." You should have a comma after "see" and an apostrophe in "one's." That's just your last sentence -- I'm not wasting my time by pointing out your other myriad errors. And if your mother is so educated, perhaps she should open her own business. She doesn't have to work for someone else, you know.

She does, its a sporting goods wholesale...she supplies most of WV, and parts of Va. Very good business to enter in this area. Many people are poor and wildlife sports are and cheap and relaxing way without having to drain your wallet.
