I tried to buy a sucker in NYC in 1940. The person behind the counter had no idea what I wanted. I had to point at it through the glass.
They call that candy lollipop.
In Albany NY I stopped in a supermarket in 1980 and asked the clerk where the pop was. He sent me to the aisle with popcorn in it.
In Western PA we can understand what soda is, but in most places around the coast of America, they don't know what pop is. You can trace the history of carbonated drinks at this site.
Actually the term POP probably originated because of the sound made when you pop the cork on such as champaign and carbonated soft drinks or carbonated water.
