Look at the devastation already -- too dangerous. Humans are NOT superior to nature just a part of it. Cannot continue to rape and pillage the environment. We need to focus on rebuilding our infrastructure to not rely on fossil fuels - NOW!!! That is the real problem. The technologies already exist. GREED, of the existing powers that be and in all individuals minds are the obstruction that can be cleared away. This is essential to prevent future severe suffering.

Talk to businesses that are affected by this current disaster. Their whole livelihood is affected by this disaster. Plus who knows what other economic ramifications will come down the line because of this. Not to mention the lives and incredible suffering of all the wildlife. Short term thinking is not what we need but long term. Our society needs to understand that some self sacrifice is necessary for the good of the whole. Is that not what Jesus taught? To help others and be generous of spirit. Just because something might be better for you short term doesn't mean it is the right answer.

The question is flawed. It is not an either or situation. Obviously we need to continue offshore drilling, however we need to be sure it is regulated and those regluations are followed.
It is imperative that as we continue to find ways to extract energy from the earth that we make sure we are doing it wisely and safely.
Everyone should watch HBO movie GASLAND. It will show you that we are headed for a similar disaster because of the way we are extracting Natural Gas from the earth.

Lester, sorry but the U.S. only has 3% of the worlds oil reserve. The containment of drilling off our coast would not have that great of an effect on gas prices unless the oil companies decide to take advantage of the public.

Ms Strock, what don't you understand, we will always be dependent on foriegn oil unless we find alternatives.
As I stated earlier the U.S. only has 3% of the worlds oil reserve, and we use 25%. No matter what we will have to import at least 85% of what we consume. We will always depend on foriegn oil unless we can cut our consumption by at least 85%.
Likewise, there is no 100% percent safe way to extract any form of carbon based energy from the earth. We are headed for similar disaster in the natural gas industry, and the idea of clean coal is an oxymoron.

Those that holler about protecting the environment and not drilling are out of touch. Turn off your air conditioning and stop driving all over creation and practice what you preach. We can produce energy on our home turf and protect the environment. We need to stop sending our cash to the Middle East...period.
