Marriage is a religious institution, has been since it's institution. If people truly beleive that there should be a separation of church and state, then government should have no authority in regulating what marriage is or isn't. Thusly, gays want a right to a religious institution, while their very relationships go against the very religion they are attempting to "embrace" by getting married. If they want their rights respected, then they need to ask for Civil Unions. Its the same thing, it just does not have it's roots in faith or religion.
