Nuclear Power Debate - Orange, MA
Do you support building more nuclear power plants?
#1 Apr 13, 2011
Nuclear power isn't the scary monster it once was.
Newer technologies (AGCR and HTGR) and one older one(the CANDU) are inherently safe. This means that meltdown or other forms of core damage are physically impossible due to the structure of the core. The systems used to cool them are also much less vulnerable to damage. When one looks at Chernobyl, the reactor that was in use was actually a prime example of the exact wrong way to build a nuclear reactor and was never in use outside of the old USSR.
However, if the US is going to build more NPPs, common sense dictates you don't build anymore of them on or near the coast near a major fault line.
You(everyone actually) just has to be smart about it and not play the odds game by scaling back on safety using the excuse, "what are the odds such and such can happen?".
The second we ask ourselves that question, Mother Nature, sure as shootin' shows us just how good the chances are.
