As a teenager some of my friends were experimenting with marijuana, and I was curious about it. So rather than try it, as many other young adults do, I decided to research it to see just what my friends were in for, and if I should be worried about the safety of them or myself. After much research it became very clear that marijuana being illegal is hurting our society more than it is helping. Many, if not the majority of the people that are selling hard drugs like coke & crack on our streets started out selling marijuana. For many of these people it is possible that they would have never delved deeper into the drug world without starting off with the somewhat easily accessible and innocent drug. This may sound like nonsense to some, but it is real and it is happening to our children. Millions of Americans smoke, and unless they live in a "medicinal" state, they all must have contact with a drug dealer... The black market.. Too many ordinary people are forced into experiencing the black market and all of the ills that come along with it just so they can smoke.
I could have instead started this off by comparing marijuana to alcohol, for it is far less harmful, addictive, and does not create violence the way alcohol does. While these things are true, it does not necessarily mean we should change our system. But the reason above does, and there are many other good reasons as well.
Now, for the comments..
#1: No, weed will not make you smarter or dumber. I'm pretty sure this person is just trying to create a bad impression.
#2: Weed does not kill brain cells. I encourage you to do some research on that using reliable and credible sources. And I'm sorry but the federal government does not count as a reliable source. I could give 100 reasons as to why that is, but I'm sure the one I will provide will do just fine.
During Nixon's presidency a "study" was done by the federal government to "find out" if
marijuana kills brain cells or not. Their method of experimentation? Suffocating monkeys in
gas masks filled with smoke, with no breaks for oxygen. OF COURSE OXYGEN DEPRIVATION
CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGE / CELL LOSS. To make things worse, this "study" was taken as fact for a period of time, and taught to our children. Now many still believe things like this, as they
haven't been presented with logical or relatable reasons otherwise.
#3: Addictiveness: Marijuana is not at all physically addictive, although it can be mentally addictive. But what does this really
mean? Well, not much actually. People can become mentally addicted to pretty much anything. In reality it is more of a mental weakness. If weed wasn't there, it would most likely be replaced with some other bad habit.
The moral of the story is this: Prohibition is causing more harm to our society and production than it is causing benefit.
P.S. Medical marijuna laws have reduced traffic deaths. Basically people are smoking instead of drinking.
