Legalization of marijuana = saving the government over $14 billion a year, spent on policing the use of marijuana (fun fact: the US spends only $6 billion protecting the Mexican and Canadian borders, combined, only $3 billion is spent protecting over 3,500 sea-ports, and only $3 billion is used to protect over 20,000 Soviet-era nuclear weapons), cutting the life line to Mexican drug cartels that use the marijuana profits to fund their other drug-sales and drug-wars (fun fact: about 1/5 of all illegal drug sales come from the sale of marijuana; ironically, marijuana sales account for 1/3 of the $25 billion a year Mexican drug-sale profits to the United States), saving the government billions by lowering the amount of Americans jailed every year (fun fact: it costs an average of $67 per day to house a person in the jail system: over half of the arrests in 2010 were for simple possession of marijuana), and destroying the stigma that follows marijuana and its users (fun fact: alcohol kills about 80,000 people per year, purely due to alcohol-poisoning: on the other hand, marijuana has never been contributed to one, single, solitary death due to overdose.(SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW)--> marijuana was not outlawed because of its affects; marijuana was outlawed because the hemp rope created from cannabis plants is several times stronger and cheaper than twine rope, which began to dig into the wealthy farm owners' pockets that grew twine, who, in turn, funded a swift prohibition campaign against marijuana, under the propaganda that marijuana is a deadly drug and kills brain cells: you now are unable to enjoy marijuana freely because the "higher-ups" didn't want you to buy hemp rope (they told you it was bad for you, without any research, or proof: sadly, in the early 1900's, the people blindly listened: but, you aren't as ignorant as they were..........are you?!).

The question should have nothing to do with money at all. This is a health and safety issue only. And health and safety , LEGITIMATE research (not propaganda from marijuana advocators that twists statistics and has no scientific basis), dictates that this plant should not be legalized until all the research is in. People who want to get high are inventing websites and posting statements that simply aren't true. What happened in the early 1900s should have no voice in a current, reasonable, scientifically based discussion. And again, if you read the TRUE research being done , it shows that any reasonable person would have concerns about the effects this drug has on the human body- particularly the brain. If they ever DO legalize it it should be routine to test anyone involved in accidents for this drug- and yes it DOES cause problems days after ingestion.

Anyone that is against the legalization of marijuana, should go to this site and get educated on this issue and learn the reasons why the 'plant' was made illlegal in the first place.

As for Bennett's envy of Amsterdam, he should realize that its legalization experiment has backfired. With the legalization of marijuana came an increase in drug addictions and dependency followed by illegal drug trafficking, human trafficking and crime. After a rapid influx of organized crime, the Netherlands has announced that it will ban foreigners from the country's pot shops starting in 2013.

Okay, that is from CNN.

Now, wiki is NOT A RELIABLE SITE and who care why it was made illegal. That has nothing, NOTHING to do with whether it is safe and harmless----it is NOT. Research shows it is not, that is is harmful, so that is all that matters.
Marijuana is not "medical". There is no such thing as "medical" marijuana. That is something pot heads have cooked up.
There are a few things it MAY be used for if all the bad things are taken out...otherwise, it is harmful.

You can get statistics to say anything you want unless you look at the whole picture. Did you learn anything in your Phd statistics course? Oh wait, you didn't take graduate level statistics did you, or you wouldn't have even posted that.

Statistics also show that some dogs eat cat poop....and that the average human swallows 8 spiders in their sleep during their lifetime (not a healthy statistic I would think) is that worthwhile knowledge?

And, Huffigton Post is biased, that is well known.
Also what were the extraneous variables, what time of year was looked at, which drivers, what ages, what were the road conditions and the weather conditions, what types of vehicles were they driving, etc.

The only way you can truly analyze is in rigorous scientific studies....again. look at Medscape, Medline, Ovid....the research is not in, very little is know, and only impulsive, addled minds are advocating legalizing marijuana.

For more than 27 years, University of Phoenix® College of Nursing has been educating nurses.
Learn how you can become a nurse leader in your communityJune 6, 2008 — Long-term, heavy cannabis use has been linked with structural brain abnormalities, a new study shows.

Investigators at the University of Melbourne, Australia, found the hippocampus and the amygdala tend to be smaller in heavy cannabis users compared with nonusers, with average volume reductions of 12% in the hippocampus and 7.1% in the amygdala. Cannabis use was also associated with subthreshold symptoms of psychotic disorders.

Cannibis use is a controversial topic; the authors note there are many who believe cannabis is relatively harmless and should be legally available. However, the current findings suggest otherwise.

"These findings challenge the widespread perception of cannabis as having limited or no neuroanatomical sequelae. Although modest use may not lead to significant neurotoxic effects, these results suggest that heavy daily use might indeed be toxic to human brain tissue," they write.

OH LOOK!!!!!!!!!!IT CHANGES THE ACTUAL ANATOMY OF YOUR BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!LET'S LEGALIZE IT!!! DUHHHH!!!!!!!

I see that you are another brainwashed government used puppet. If you want to know the truth about marijuana then I'll lay it down for you. The truth is that we live in a democracy where the majority rules. The latest polls taken show that 56% of Americans see through the government's lies and support legalization. It will be legalized and I hope it happens in your lifetime so that other voters can point there finger at you and laugh in your face. If you don't like these FACTS then you should move to a communist country were everything is outlawed. You'll probably like it there!

Transgenerational Effects

The researchers report that past studies have shown that cannabinoid exposure during pregnancy can lead to developmental problems in both human and rat offspring, including impaired cognitive function and increased risk for depression and anxiety.

In a study published last year in Behavioral Brain Research, Dr. Byrnes and colleagues found that rats' exposure to opioids during adolescence was associated with anxiety-like behavior and increased sensitivity to morphine in their adult offspring.

For the current study, the investigators sought to examine the transgenerational effects of adolescent cannabinoid use.

YUP, HURTS THE UNBORN CHILD TOO , JUST LIKE OTHER DRUGS THAT ARE HARMFUL!!!!!!

first off the medicine to suppress my immune system cause a list of side of effects such as liver failure, kidney failure, vomiting, and even death... That med is very dangerous!!! I am sorry if marijuana cause non if those side effects but help ease my pain, slows my white blood cells down and allows me to eat so I don't die... Even the other meds which I've tried do not give me an appetite: why would you deny some one this opportunity to feel better!!! If it was your child you would not want them to not feel pain? You would rather them suffer? I am a full time worker and a full time student! I function just fine on it with out it I would spend my day in bed sick and in pain!!! I think if it is used as medicine then it should be legal!!!

dear mr phart please be kinder to billy roy as he was newly saved and he may be over anxious to save his country from this evil vileness that hides itself behind a maryjane leaf. billy roy got a plate in his head from the nam shot by his own troops all hopped up on that turbo grade pot that the enemy gave our soldiers to make them easier to kill. now there are volumes of testimonials to verify as to the validity of said claims ect ect. for every sound minded american who can handle that stuff there are hundreds maybe thousands who cannot. It will be safer for the rest of us if you dopeheads by your devils cigars from a pusher. I would invite you to our church but it is clear your thinking has been infused with this thc molecule.

Why do we as average Americans put up with this tyranny? Who the hell are you to tell me how to live?.........If we become a country in which we all say, "please tell me how to live", then we are all doomed and this nation is far from having the greatness it once had!

Honestly, this would bring revenue back to any state that legalizes marijuana. Crime would certainly go down an everyone would be really chill all the time. Besides pot is alot more safer than alcohol or tobacco, but on the downside if companies distribute marijuana like ciggarettes than most likely the effect of the marijuana would be alot lighter and just as harmful as tobacco. But all around I don't care if it's legal or illegal I'll still do it.

You're right. This is America. I don't have to be exposed to that noxious stuff, not in my environment, and not in the driver of the car on the street with me. Also, no bleary red eyes on the waitress in the restaurant I take my kids to, no drug heads teaching my kids, no dopers stinking up the theatre I watch my movie in. Hop On a boat and move to the Netherlands....oh wait....you won't be able to get doped there next year cause their drug problem got so much worse when they legalized pot...so buy an island and go sit on it while you get high and blow your brain cells.
