My husband is a public defender in Western KY and he works closely with many state officials as well as drug users. 98% of the drug cases he deals with are prescription drugs, meth or even alcohol. Only 2% are MJ related. He feels that in due time it will be legalized based on water cooler gossip at the capital. When they can legally sale mj and tax it (the government) that is, it will be sold legally. There will be restrictions however, you won't be able to just grow it in your back yard and sale it to your neighbor but for those of you who only want to smoke it and aren't looking to make a profit, it will be legal eventually. And you are right, there are many sick and suffering individuals that are suffering when MJ could benefit them. Not just cancer patients or people with glaucoma, but there is also research that indicates it can be beneficial to those suffering from Autism and Multiple Sclerosis. It would be safe to say that there are very few people in Owsley County that haven't grown and/or smoked MJ at one point in time or another. I would much rather have a loved one smoke a j from time to time than shoot up a big oxy or od on a methadone/xanax cocktail.

I do not think that any of us will ever live to see it legalized in our life time. I think it will be some day due to it's ability to help with some health issues, but I think our younger generation will be the ones to benefit from it's medicinal properties.

If po t was allowed then a lot of the pills would leave. I would rather see someone smoking weed than jacked up on pills...

I don't believe that the legalization of pot would affect the pill problem in the least. Personally, I don't see anything wron with pot. It's affects are in no way worse than alcohol. But saying that it would curb the pill problem is ridiculous. At this time both are illegal and the pill problem is worse than ever, pot is very plentiful and the amount of focus put on pot in OC has subsided tremendously since the 90's. Long gone are the summer days where choppers hovered in the sky from daylight til dark 7 days a week from May til September, you no longer see humvees pulling out of every "holler", back road, side road, passing them driving through town etc. Even though it is still illegal you don't see the "BIG" pot bust take place in the county like they did a few years back. When was the last time a HUGE Crop was discovered and an example was made of the grower. I see the legalization of marijuana taking place in the next 5-10-15 years. Definitely in our lifetime. I know many say that marijuana is a gateway drug, that pot smoking only leads to other things. I believe that to be true in a few cases but it isn't the astounding number they would have you believe. Alcohol would be just as much of a gateway "drug' if not more because the affects of alcohol are more similar to pills than the affects of MJ. If you ask me and I know you didn't pills are the problem, not pot. There is no scientific research to indicate you can overdose from pot, however you can die from alcohol poisoning, you can't develop a chemical addiction because there is so addictive chemical, but you can become an alcoholic from alcohol abuse. They say MJ kills brain cells, as does alcohol. There is just no valid argument that pot should be illegal, at least not one you couldn't make about alcohol and tobacco.
