I oppose because it is government takeover of health care. Obambi says that it wouldn't 'require' you to drop your coverage. Yeah, that codeword wouldn't require me, but it would force me to take government coverage if my employer finds it difficult to compete with the government. Government will always grow deficits because it is other people's money. Don't you liberals get it? The American people understand the consequences of government stifling competition. By the way, what do the downtrodden, homeless and overall destitute people who would receive health care have to contribute back to society? NOTHING. That is the way it has always been with these scourge on the rest of us.

Repubs want everything to stay the status quo, it's all really simple, either you want to keep paying the highest insurance rates in THE WORLD or you don't, all those people at the so-called tea parties, want, no, in fact demand to keep paying higher and higher rates.

The federal government has repeatedly displayed its inefficiency in providing services, while taxpayers always foot the bill. If true change in the health care system is desired, Congress should focus on allowing more generic drugs come to market, reform of current malpractice laws (tort reform) and most of all, DEREGULATION of current health providers! Lip service is paid to "increased competition", yet there has been no move to allow insurance providers to operate across state lines, which would increase competition and decrease prices for consumers across the country.

another " misconception ", who said anything about the gov't " running " health care? it would be another " option ", just like Medicare and Medicaid, except instead of it being " free ", you have to pay to get it, they think by adding this other option, it will help to bring down the rates we pay for insurance, this is really not that difficult to understand, you just have to want to understand. just use the common sense that God gave you.

there are insurance companies in washington, who throw these lavish parties and hand out lavish " gifts " to the very same people who vote on health reform, am i the only one who see's a problem with this? open your eyes, just use some common sense.

ok, you explain to me how after 8 YEARS of doing nothing, they all of a sudden have all these " ideas " , where were these ideas in " dubyas " first 4 years? 2nd 4 years? the repub's had ample oppty. to fix this, what did they do, they sat on their hands and watched as the insurance companies gouged the American people, in those 8 years insurance rates went up 27% across the board. millions of people lost the ability to pay for insurance, again they did nothing but watch and line their own pockets.
at some point, you people need to wake up.

chit happens, people get old, people get hurt ( car wrecks, etc.) this country needs to take care of the people who made it what it is, what happens when the insurance rates and hospital costs eat up the 3 million you have spent your whole life saving, should we just put a bullet in their head because they should have saved 5 million instead of 3?

you people need to grow the f up, life is not black and white, it's complicated, i should not have to be a millionaire 10x's over to be able to get good health care, this country pays the most for health care in the world, and yet we are one of the unhealthiest non 3rd world countries there is, why, because people cant afford to go to the doctor.

The details the President outlines in this video are those that every American needs to know. No matter your political party or whether or not you have insurance, his plan for health care security and stability matters to all of us.

Millions of American citizens cannot get health insurance — and 14,000 are losing their insurance every day. If we do nothing, half of Americans under the age of 65 will lose their health insurance at some point in the next ten years.

That’s not right. Plain and simple. For Americans with insurance as well as those without it, inaction is not an option. In America, no one should go broke because they get sick.

Bottom line — health insurance reform will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance, coverage for those who don’t, and will lower the cost of health care for our families, our businesses, and our government.

As the President says, now is the time to deliver the change we need on health care. Forward this email and make sure your family, friends and social networks take four minutes and watch this video.

Better, more affordable health care requires free-market reforms: the freedom to purchase health plans across state lines; tax reforms like "large" health savings accounts; making health insurance portable, controlled by the individual rather than government or an employer; making medical licenses portable, and more.

President Obama is right when he says that the U.S. health care system needs reform. Although this country provides the finest care in the world, our health care system has serious problems. It costs too much. Too many people lack health insurance. And quality can be uneven.

But a government takeover of the health care system, as proposed by the president and some in Congress, would be a step in the wrong direction. Instead, we should pursue a uniquely American solution, one that builds on free markets, competition and choice.

Let individuals control their health care dollars, and free them to choose from a wide variety of health plans and providers.
Move away from a health care system dominated by employer-provided health insurance. Health insurance should be personal and portable, controlled by individuals themselves rather than government or an employer. Employment-based insurance hides much of the true cost of health care to consumers, thereby encouraging over-consumption. It also limits consumer choice, since employers get final say over what type of insurance a worker will receive. It means people who don’t receive insurance through work are put at a significant and costly disadvantage. And, of course, it means that if you lose your job, you are likely to end up uninsured as well.
Changing from employer to individual insurance requires changing the tax treatment of health insurance. The current system excludes the value of employer-provided insurance from a worker’s taxable income. However, a worker purchasing health insurance on their own must do so with after-tax dollars. This provides a significant tilt towards employer-provided insurance, which should be reversed. Workers should receive a standard deduction, a tax credit, or, better still, large Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) for the purchase of health insurance, regardless of whether they receive it through their job or purchase it on their own.
We need to increase competition among both insurers and health providers. People should be allowed to purchase health insurance across state lines. One study estimated that that adjustment alone could cover 17 million uninsured Americans without costing taxpayers a dime.
We also need to rethink medical licensing laws to encourage greater competition among providers. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, midwives, and other non-physician practitioners should have far greater ability to treat patients. Doctors and other health professionals should be able to take their licenses from state to state. We should also be encouraging innovations in delivery such as medical clinics in retail outlets.
Congress should give Medicare enrollees a voucher, let them choose any health plan on the market, and let them keep the savings if they choose an economical plan. Medicare could even give larger vouchers to the poor and sick to ensure they could afford coverage.
The expansion of “health status insurance” would protect many of those with preexisting conditions. States may also wish to experiment with high risk pools to ensure coverage for those with high cost medical conditions.
