If this doesn't enlighten the people on how our government has been hijacked by the Insurance Industry and the Multi-National Corporations, I don't know what will. The idea that our government will mandate everyone without insurance to buy coverage is outrageous. I never thought that I, a Progressive Democrat would agree with Republican Senator Grassley on the constitutionality of such an idea.
If you choose not to carry insurance in the event you're laid off, your employer doesn't provide health care, you're self-employed, or you just can't afford to purchase insurance, the government is going to punish/fine you. The fine being kicked around right now is $1,500 annually with the Internal Revenue being the collecting agent.
I've personally been self employed for 24 years and have never needed my government to make me pay for insurance. I've always kept myself covered but I'm concerned that in the very near future, affordability will be out of reach. Neglecting reform is NOT an option. A huge number of our Countrymen have NO coverage. Uninsured Americans have hit fifty million with thousands more being added each week.
A Medicare system that covers every American is the most efficient way to reform the Apartheid health system we have now. Look up HR 676 written by Congressman Conyers and Kucinich and see the humanity, security and affordability of covering all Americans. Who wants legislation that would require you to buy a "for-profit" insurance plan? Medicare for all is in the best interest of "We the People"! Just ask our Seniors how well Medicare works for them.
This insurance mandate the House and Senate are trying to force on the American people should be unacceptable and offensive to everyone. Check out how much campaign money our Representatives have received from the "health care industry" at www.maplight.org . You will understand why they're designing health care reform leaving in the insurance companies and their profits. There's not much difference anymore between the Democrats and the Republicans. They both are creating legislation that funnels public money to private corporations.
