Hunting, shooting sports, and to a lesser degree the ability to defend oneself's life and property are not at the heart of the 2nd amendment. If you look back to the time in history when it was ratified it seems clear to me that it true intent was to give the people (as an absolute last resort) the ability to cast off an oppressive and or unrepresentative government.

Really? No one has any thing to say about this? I know it's a heavy subject but at some point it needs to be discussed. You'll rarely if ever hear this from anyone in government because it's in place to limit their power. I really would like to hear some other peoples opinions on this.

Lesser degree? The 2nd Amendment makes no mention of hunting or shooting sports. So how can be defending one's life be "a lesser degree" function of the 2nd Amendment?

”The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
~Thomas Jefferson

”From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable ... the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that is good”
~George Washington

”To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”
~George Mason

”A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
~George Washington

And finally, for you liberals, a quote from the man who was your God until he was replaced by your current deity..

”By calling attention to ‘a well regulated militia,’‘the security of the nation,’ and the right of each citizen ‘to keep and bear arms,’ our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy… The Second Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important.”
~John F. Kennedy
