A 911 phone call travels at the speed of light...a bullet travels at about 1100 feet per second...the police car travels at 50 miles per hour...do the math . Protection is a personal responsibility. Keeping and bearing arms enables that responsibility. Handguns protect, police investigate.

Across the nation in D.C. the handgun ban was lifted, lo and behold, gun-related injuries and deaths drop drastically. An armed society is a polite society; who would want to be a mugger when anyone could be packing heat? I just think it's ridiculous to require people to buy "concealed carry" permits. Would they rather us openly carry firearms on city streets and parks? Ridiculous. It's just another sleazy way to earn revenue for the state.

Asking Topix visitors about handguns is no more "scientific" than asking Fox News viewers about them. The truth is that all other rich nations ban or tightly control pistols and enjoy much lower murder rates as a result, and no one is trying to take away your right to a shotgun or rifle for home defense.

Trying to compare countries with vastly different demographics and socio-economic dynamics is something only MSNBC would do.

Handguns pop out of pockets at all the worst times, and I've been there to see it. Most gun murders occur during disputes--usually because one party doesn't know the other is about to turn up the volume with a hidden handgun. And then there are the deranged assholes that whip out high-capacity pistols in classrooms, workplaces, restaurants and political rallies, and just mow down everyone in sight. That's rare outside the US.

Vastly different demographics? Hardly. One famous study compares Seattle and Vancouver BC murder rates over the course of a year. Two very similar cities, of similar size and density, with similar demographics, located next door to each other...yet Vancouver's murders are a fraction of Seattle's, because Canada bans handguns.

Handgun bans work well, worldwide.

Compare Vancouver to East St. Louis, IL...or Detroit, MI...or Newark, NJ.
Please show how Vancouver has the same poverty level, drug crime and broken family situation. If not, then your comparison of Vancouver to Seattle is all too provincial.
