Paul Harvey On Gun Control

September 2000

Are you considering backing gun control laws? Do you think that because you may not own a gun, the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment donít matter?

∑ In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, approximately 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

∑ Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million "educated" people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

That places total victims who lost their lives because of gun control at approximately 56 million in the last century. Since we should learn from the mistakes of history, the next time someone talks in favor of gun control, find out which group of citizens they wish to have exterminated.

More from Paul Harvey
Gun control is nothing more than "people control." Polititians can pass all the laws they want, but still the lawless will not obey the laws! We as home and property owners need, and have, the right to protect ourselves and family. And as crime becomes more rampant, laws should be directed at the criminals, NOT THE LAW ABIDING CITIZEN! We need to arm our law abiding citizens, not disarm them!
The right to keep and bear arms was not granted by the founding fathers, the founding fathers of this country AFFIRMED it in writing the second ammendment, because it was a preexisting, God given right for a person to be able to defend him or herself.
If you are against personal ownership of guns and expect America to remain free, then you are truly the very definition of a fool. However, if after reading the quotes below, you've come to the conclusion that personal ownership of arms is necessary, then you have grown in wisdom.

The quotes say it all.

A quote from Adolf Hitler, 1935

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future."

Quotes from founding fathers of this once great nation.

"Guard with jeolous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined." -Patrick Henry

"I ask sir, who is the militia? It is the whole people...To disarm the people, that is the best and most effective way to enslave them..." - George Mason

"Americans [have] the right and advantage of being armed -- unlike citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust people with arms." -James Madison

"...Arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace." -Thomas Paine

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword because the whole body of people are armed and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States..." -Noah Webster

It is a bit unbelievable that such simple and obvious truisms are lost on people today. You'd think these anti-establishment liberal types would be the last ones to condone only letting "The Man" have guns.

I am more convinced that the average joe's command of history today is limited to a fuzzy recollection of the 80's, before which the world sprang into being wholesale.

Citizens of this Country deserve the right to defend their family and their personal property. Thugs, who seem to think it is "their" right to TAKE from someone else what they didn't WORK for are the scourge - not the hard-working citizens of the Country.

if it wasnt for the town and country folks of long ago haveing guns we still would be under british rule citizens without guns gives the goverment the right to control you any way they see fit right or wrong. just remember one day you may wish you had a gun when you see some thugs takeing turns on your wife, steeling your stuff you worked so hard to get, or placeing a child in the ground because you had nothing to protect it with. its your choice to own or not but dont try and take or make my choice to own a gun and dont come running to my house when you have a robber are a rapist in your house defend it yourself

Not only do I NOT support a ban on handguns, I am going to get a conceal and carry permit. This is so I can once again feel safe walking the streets that I used to walk safely.

I used to think that bars on the doors and windows of stores was a sad commentary on our cities. Then, I started seeing them on homes along with alarm system signs. Again I thought this was a sad day for the citizens of our cities. But the worst was the sign with the circle and the slash over a gun that is posted on the door of the daycare center. Makes you think.

A ban would be unfair to the honest, lawful 98% majority of gunowners

Well,I have to agree with waskley wabbit. We have to protect ourselves now a days.Times have changed so drastically that people are scared to death to go out at night to walk their dogs. I however would probably blow off my foot if I owned a gun.Cooked a pot of beans one time in a pressure cooker and blew the lid off into the ceiling!ha!

i grew up in the country most my young yrs, my first gun was a single shot shot gun at age 10. i shot my first duck at age 10 out of season lost my gun for a yr. never did shoot a duck again in season or out. was hunting by myself at age 12 rabbits squirrels coons, sometimes if it wasnt for that we would not have no meat on the table. both my kids 1 girl 1 boy both hunt they were in the woods with me while still in pampers they were teached in safety and shooting but only what their mind could hold at the age they were. they are 22 and 19 now still hunt and can break any gun down and clean every part of it and put it back together. if we teach our kids the right way to use guns at a early age and show them the fun that can be had by doing it safely and responceble alot can change. teaching starts at home you do drugs your kids will prob do drugs and so on. there is no gun out there that is meant to kill anyone unless there life is threatend. but you have those that feel they can do what ever they want with a gun and wont blink a eye while shooting someone. put the gun in a law abideing persons hand and i think the thugs killers and rapist will dwindle to very few, but if you dont know how to use it get traing or leave it alone

It's a basic right to be able to protect yourself and your should most definitely be able to have the necessary tools (a weapon) to protect them.

Just watched the documentary by Larry Elders "Michael and me", very interesting and informative, for those that haven't seen it, it's a counter to Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine". Except its a more common sense approach, instead of using one or two things that justifies a view for gun control and hammering them into the ground or telling one sided stories like Michael Moore, he interviews people on the street, collage students, lawyers and victims of violent crimes. He let's the people answer the question of the need for more gun control or eradication of guns all together, and gets some very common sense answers, and a few not so common sense answers. Elders also interviews authors on gun issues, police officers and political figures about their views on the correlation of guns and violence, and what do you know, the general consensus is that guns are not responsible for killing people, people are responsible for killing people, a gangbanger was asked what they would do if there were no guns, he said that they would find other ways to kill. One person quoted Robert A. Heinlein, "An armed society is a polite society", think about it.

Guns should be limited to rifles only.
