It's a civil rights issue, plain and simple.

none of the reasons people give for opposing it makes any sense.

I Know several gay couples...from work, neighborhood, family, etc. Every gay person I know has 2 straight parents, who were not all that happy about their gay children. I also know of a few children of gay parents and not a single one is gay. So the idea that people can turn others gay simply does not hold water. Secondly, the Bible has no weight, for several reasons. One, this is not a theocracy. Our laws are based on rights, not the Bible. If they were based on it, working on Sunday would be against the law. So would tatoos, eating lobster and shrimp, Holding paychecks for a week or in most cases now, two, or wearing clothes of different materials. And if those opposed to gay unions based upon scripture were honest, they would demand laws making such acts and actions illegal. But they don't so I think those people are just searching for any port in a storm. They oppose it, they can't defend their prejudice, so they pull out the old Bible, and yammer about being good servants of God, yet ignore all the biblical expectations we break every day and never utter a single word of disapproval, never mind laws to stop it. And if weakening the institution worries you, Divorce weakens it far more than Gay unions. I can't even figure out how gay unions hurts straight ones, and no one has yet to be able to explain it.

Marriage is not a religious institution, it is a legal one. The "contract" is a legal and binding one. The Courts create them, and the courts dismantle them. You can decide to officiate them through a church, but they are still legal unions. If you get married in a church but fail to get a license from the state, it will not be recognized by the government. You don't get the tax credits, the rights to survivorship, SS benefits, etc. Not to mention there are quite a few churches that officiate gay unions. So that argument goes out the window. As I stated earlier, no opposing view makes any sense. None, and I do mean none, have even a small foundation on which to base opposition. And I have listened to them all. Each and every one, when questioned or compared to similar opinions, they ALL simply fall apart as I have shown with the few arguments discussed here.

My biggest problem with gay unions is if I am ever invited to one, where am I going to find "His & His" towels?

I totally agree. Except, being gay is not a choice, you are born either straight or gay or some degree of bi. In less than 50 years, science will PROVE that your sexuality is determind at the moment of conception. Open minded people at that time will look back and think that humans of our time were living in the Dark Ages. Religion will hold many back but that's their problem.

They could always find a pair of gay women and they could keep the "His & His" and the women could keep the "Hers & Hers".:)

It is only natural that two loving people should marry!
