(Genesis 2:4-25)- This is the account of the earth and the heavens- and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground and breathed the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground- trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was seperated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,“You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”Then the Lord God said,“It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

A legally binding contract between two adults should not be defined by religious traditions. Not everyone who gets married is Christian. Why can't two adults in a committed relationship get the legal benefits of marriage, just because they're of the same gender? Or more importantly, why does a *religious institution* offer legal benefits to *anyone*?

Why does the gay community feel the need to encroach on the religious views of others? Marriage is biblical, long before this country was founded. Call it something civil union and get on with more important issues!

IMHO they do not want to "encroach" on ANYONES religious views. What they want is equal treatment. Marriage, while having religious connotations, is simply a legal contract. You can be married with no church or religion involved. What they want is to have access to the same rights, both monetary and legal, given to an osc when they say I do and sign the contract (marriage license)

Instead of asking your question... ask these....
Why can't religious zealots see marriage as both a religous and legal concept one which have nothing to do with each other.
Why do religious zealots feel a need to deny american citizens equal rights under the law
Why do religious zealots understand there is a difference between civil unions and marriage
Why do religous zealots believe they have total ownership of the word marriage....

Ya... last time I checked....we did not vote on civil rights. It doesn't matter if 99 percent of the population is against something... if it infringes on civil rights of the 1% it is unconstitutional....
