Should we regulate farm chores as child labor, or should it be up to the parents?

Are you kidding??? I can't believe this is even a question. Children need chores, it teaches responsibility and to be accountable

It's not. It only applies to hired child labor. Usually children of migrant farm workers. It does not prohibit family members from working on the family farm. Just issued to hype people up.

i don't care these morgan county kids get everthing they want handed to them on a sliver platter so they need put out sloping hogs, picking peanuts, digging corn, gethering eggs, pickeng blackberrys and such. why the kids nowadays would holler child abuce if they was put out doing farm choars.

l agree. Make them pluck chickens, haul hay, castrate bulls and all the other fun and entertainment as our generation experienced.

I believe you're wrong. Go to the Dept. of Labor & read. It would prevent kids from working on their own family owned farms. Also, would affect kids doing 4-H & FFA. The age is under 18 on some of the jobs...16 on others

I believe you're wrong. Go to the Dept. of Labor & read. It says kids cannot work on their own family owned farms.

You might review this resource. What "could" happen doesn't translate into what "will" happen. Having been reared on a farm I agree that farmer's children should work it. That farmer is responsible for his own children's health and safety. However, I have seen children and teenagers hired out in the summer that don't really understand the issues with machinery. The regulation, it is not "law", is designed to protect both the farmer that hires these non-family members from being injured an causing the farmer to be financially ruined with a lawsuit from that child laborer's family and the child laborer that may be inexperienced in farm work and machinery.
Of course some of you aren't opposed to child sweatshops either.

Under Dept. of Labor it specifically said children of farm owners

The news release attached says there were concerns about the "parental exemption" that did exist. It appears however the rule change proposal has been withdrawn.....Much ado about nothing. Me thinks you protest too much.

In farm work, permissible jobs and hours of work vary by age.
Parental exemption: Minors of any age may be employed by their parents at any time in any occupation on a farm owned or operated by his or her parent(s).
All exemptions to agricultural employment rules are statutory in nature and the Department's regulations reflect laws enacted by the U.S. Congress.
Many states’ statutes and regulations place tighter restrictions on farm work hours performed by minors. Consult your state department of labor for specific information.
