Old enough to fight and die for our country, then old enough to drink.

We have enough young morons out there drinking and acting like idiots. Some try to get alcohol at Frickers... then get mad about it. If it changes to 18 the DUI's will be through the roof let alone what damage they will do to anyone else on the road. As for military, if you serve your country, great! I do to, but then we can discuss a limitation from 18 as long as your in a VFW. As in, you have to be deployed before your granted that permission.

If it's all changed to 18, then it doesn't matter if you served for the country or not. You want to get real recognition? Go serve, it doesn't take a beer at a bar to prove anything.

What would be the benefit to the community as a whole if the drinking age was lowered to 18?

You mention that if you're old enough to serve your country, you should also be old enough to drink. With as many young men and women who have served in combat zones and have returned home suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrom, would a lower drinking age be a helpful or a harmful thing from a mental health standpoint?

Can anyone remember why Ohio got rid of "low beer" and made everything 21? Same way with Michigan. Michigan used to be 18 for hard liquor. Anyone remember the logic for that change?

More than enough. Half the teenagers drive like there's no tomorrow as it is. Let's add some good ole legal alcohol consumption to the equation and see what happens.

The notion that if you are old enough to serve your country you are old enough to drink had a lot more teeth back when the draft was active and those called upon were required to serve. Now it's a choice.

It looks like during the later part of the Viet Nam war some states lowered the drinking age, probably in response to the mantra that if men are old enough to serve their country, they should be able to drink.

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 withholds revenue from states that allow the purchase of alcohol by anyone under the age of 21. Prior to the effective date of that Act, the drinking age varied from state to state.

Maybe IF they lower the drinking age and then raise the minimum driving age to say 18 also. Oh wait...that's moronic.

You guys just want a lower drinking age. You come up with crappy responses "old enough to die...". Did you serve? Did you? If you did then use the excuse. If not come up with something else.

Lemonade Lucy brings up a good point, something I had forgotten about. The National Minimum Age Drinking Law of 1984. My next question to everyone is do you beleive that the Federal Government has the right to dictate a national drinking age? Taking it a step further, do you b elieve it's right for the Federal Government to basically blackmail the states into compliance? Face it, deny states federal funding for infrastructure projects is nothing more than blackmail.
