Explosion in India's northeast kills 6

An official says an explosion at a roadside pig market in India's northeast has killed six people and injured 40.

Local magistrate P. Gohain says the blast occurred Sunday afternoon in Kumarikata in the state of Assam near the Bhutan border. Roughly 20 of the victims were injured critically.

Gohain says the blast is under investigation and would not speculate who was behind it. But militant separatists have set off bombs in the region in the past.

Several rebel groups are fighting for autonomy or independence in India's northeast.
