Bermuda Issues 'Theatre Boycott' Stamps

Bermuda has released a set of commemorative stamps to honor those involved in the 1959 theatre boycott which ended segregation in public buildings including theatres, hotels and schools around the country.

According to an article by Chris Campbell on the Bitdepth.org website, "The two main movie theatres had segregated seating with the balcony and centre section reserved for those whose skin was white and the rest of the theatre was open to those whose skin was darker. Segregation ran throughout Bermudian society and an anonymous group decided to organize a boycott of the theatres. Two weeks after the boycott began the hotels, restaurants and movie theatres all were desegregating."

U.S. Honors Anna Julia Cooper

Educator, scholar, feminist and activist Anna Julia Cooper (c.1858-1964), who gave voice to the African-American community during the 19th and 20th centuries — from the end of slavery to the beginning of the Civil Rights movement — has been immortalized on a postage stamp.

Cooper, best known for her groundbreaking collection of essays and speeches, A Voice from the South by a Black Woman of the South, also exhibited educational leadership, most notably challenging the racist notion that African Americans were naturally inferior.

The 44-cent First-Class Anna Julia Cooper commemorative stamp features a portrait of her created by Kadir Nelson of San Diego, CA, who based his painting on an undated photograph. Nelson worked under the direction of Art Director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD.

Ms. Cooper is the 32nd honoree in the Black Heritage series.

Royal Mail Issues 'Mythical' stamps

Britain's Telegraph reports, "A fire-breathing dragon, a giant carrying a boulder and Queen Mab riding her chariot are among the characters from British folklore featured on the six postage stamps."

Two first class stamps have images of a majestic stone-grey unicorn and a flame-spitting dragon, while a pair of 62p stamps for worldwide airmail letters show a pixie riding a snail and a boulder-wielding giant.

Artist Dave McKean and novelist Neil Gaiman, the creators of the Sandman comic books, collaborated to design the stamps and accompanying presentation pack in which Gaiman explores the history of the creatures.
