Peterson: Highland Park gets boost in confidence from big win

Highland Park football coach Nick Cummings knows his Scots still have plenty of tough tests ahead, starting with a home game against state-ranked Topeka High on Friday night. But last week's 60-26 romp past Kansas City-Harmon gave Highland Park an inkling of what could be possible if the young Scots keep making progress.

Bishop Miege's high-powered offense on Friday picked up right where it left off in its victory over Blue Valley Northwest, but the defense looked much sharper than it had in week one, propelling the Stags to a 29-0 victory over Gardner-Edgerton that moved the Stags to 2-0 on the year. Quarterback Ryan Willis connected with receiver Jafar Armstrong for a 70-yard touchdown in the first quarter that set the tone for the night and Dawson Downing added two first half touchdowns to put the Stags up 22-0 at the half.

Central Plains pummels Kinsley in one-sided victory

Everything went Central Plains High School's way on Friday night. The Oilers advanced to 2-0 on a 62-0 victory over Kinsley with the 45-point rule ending the game at halftime.

Highland Park gets first win of season vs. KC-Harmon

In a battle of teams who went winless last season, Highland Park proved to be the one moving in the right direction Friday night. In the Scots' first victory since they knocked off Topeka West at the end of 2012 season - only to see the game handed to the Chargers by forfeit - Highland Park romped to a 48-6 halftime lead over visiting Kansas City-Harmon, then held on to win 60-26.

Hayden rolls again, takes 43-0 win over Rural

Hayden's football team has beat its two biggest rivals, Seaman and Washburn Rural, by a 99-7 margin to start the 2014 season, including a 43-0 shutout of Rural Friday night at Hayden. But like a true veteran, Hayden coach Bill Arnold, while thrilled with the Wildcats' performance over the first two weeks, is already looking for areas that need improvement as the team moves forward.

Manhattan defense suffocates Seaman, 41-13

Daniel Izquierdo Jr. had the big play of the game on offense for the Indians, breaking free on a 64-yard scoring run for Manhattan in the second quarter. Manhattan would also score two defensive touchdowns on interception and fumble returns.

Andover defeats rival Central

Disregarding the fact that Andover lost a fumble and had a major defensive breakdown in the final two minutes Friday night was impossible for Andover football coach Mike Lee - despite the Trojans' 31-24 win over rival Andover Central to improve to 2-0. Moving along from the fact that Andover Central had scored 14 unanswered points, cutting a three-touchdown deficit to seven points, well, Lee couldn't do it.

West attacks North from all angles in rout

Already leading North 26-0 in the second quarter, West quarterback Chaz Capps found himself with two options: Either hand the ball off to his tailback on an inside give, or pull the ball back and let it rip. Capps decided on the latter, showcasing his arm on a 14-yard fade to senior wideout Isaac Rodriguez for the fifth of the Pioneers' 10 touchdowns en route to a 66-0 victory.
