Nicolet wants football team out of North Shore Conference

This month the WIAA executive staff is traveling around the state for area meetings in each of its seven districts. On Monday the meeting for District 7, which includes most of southeast Wisconsin, was held at Greenfield.

Wausau East, Merrill want in GNC

Could the landscape of high school sports in northern Wisconsin change again? If a couple of schools from the Wisconsin Valley Conference get their way, it will. The biggest news to come out of the WIAA District 2 Area Meeting on Wednesday in Antigo were formal request by Merrill and Wausau East to leave the Wisconsin Valley Conference and join the Great Northern Conference in all sports.

Is there reason for renewed hope in Bo Ryan's 2015 recruiting class after all? The Badgers appear to be in the driver's seat for a nice "stretch-4" prospect. Wisconsin basketball is more typically known for unearthing hidden gems on the recruiting trail and either locking them up early or getting poached when more blue-blooded programs realize what a talent Bo Ryan and Co.

Wrightstown has been dealt quite a schedule this early season, playing its first three games against quality teams in Freedom, Little Chute and Southern Door, and winning twice. Friday, it didn't get any easier as the Tigers went on the road to battle an undefeated Kewaunee team that has dominated its opponents.

Homestead has 17 National Merit semifinalists

The Mequon-Thiensville School District learned today that 17 seniors from the Class of 2010 were named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship. Homestead High School has never had more than 17 National Merit semifinalists in one graduating class.

In a battle of two offenses that entered Friday's contest averaging over 40 points per game, the balance of South Milwaukee prevailed over Brown Deer and their stellar quarterback Zack Baun. South Milwaukee running back Ian Pribyl rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and senior quarterback Justin Oliden passed for three more as the Rockets withstood a last-gasp drive from Baun and the Falcons to hold off host Brown Deer in a Woodland East thriller, 41-35.
