Reader opting out of food 'experiment'

Thursday October 15 2009

Dear editor,

For the last 27 years I have looked forward to the annual crop of sweet corn. This year was no exception.

However, within two hours of eating it, my insides grumbled and complained and I dashed off to the washroom.

Three times I had corn with the same result. I didn’t buy any more.
Up north I had local sweet corn without incident. Back home again, I asked a farmer about his corn.

He said his yellow corn was Bt-corn and that the bi-colour corn was also genetically-modified (GM) corn, as was most in the area.

I did not know that GM sweet corn was approved for human consumption.

It’s not just corn that has been changed. Soy, canola, cotton and increasingly, sugar beets are grown as GM crops and incorporated into manufactured combinations we commonly call “food”.

We have all become lab rats without our informed consent.

It is possible to consume these altered crops hidden in our food without, for the most part, an immediate catastrophic reaction. Look at what is in your shopping cart.

There have not been any long-term feeding trials done to date. Scarce animal studies, on the other hand, point to serious consequences such as fertility problems, allergy responses, immune system compromises, cancers and death.

The information stays hidden and we stay ignorant. Do your own research, ask questions, check labels, choose wisely and eat carefully. I am opting out of the experiment.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Taurus

Everything seems to be getting under your skin at the moment, but this is no excuse to lose your temper, and you know it. Better by far to be discreet and plough on steadily, without looking to the left or right. If you keep your feet on the ground and don't get discouraged, there are definitely fair winds that will blow you along. It's just a question of finding the right balance between confidence and commonsense.
