It'll Take a Social Revolution for Americans to Embrace the Apple Watch

Called bracelet watches, they were seen as a rather unseemly replacement for the pocketwatch, a more discreet means of keeping track of the time. Though mass-produced versions first emerged in the 1880s, it wasn't until 1927 that U.S.-made wristwatches finally outstripped sales of their entrenched competitor.

CEO Of Guess Watches Welcomes Apple To The Fray

Madonna and Manchild: Is Adulthood in America a Relic of the Past?

What does Mark Twain's classic outsider hero Huck Finn have to do with the small army of affable manchildren that actor Seth Rogen has played in Judd Apatow films? And while we're at it, what does second-wave feminism have to do with the decline of the fictional Don Draper from "Mad Men," along with the retro-patriarchal mentality he embodies, and the rise of the fictional Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and the City," the televised byproduct of some unholy alliance involving Erica Jong, Clintonomics and the collected works of Madonna? The New York Times' A.O. Scott takes on these heady questions, which at first glance might show the telltale signs of yet another trend piece that takes popular culture too seriously and extrapolates wildly from a handful of entertainment products.

Apple watch threatens Swiss timepieces

While the Apple timepiece, which can do everything from opening your hotel room door to paying for a Big Mac, might eventually impact the whole $60 billion Swiss watch industry in the fight for customers, analysts say it is the lower-end of the market that will feel the pressure first. The threat is biggest for small, independent watchmakers and Swatch, which gets about a fifth of sales from namesake plastic watches and the Tissot brand, they say.
