I just received word of a construction site accident, in which a crane fell from atop a building killing at least one worker and injuring several others. Supposedly in Cape Town. Has anyone heard of this accident, saw any news coverage,etc....

The latest name being used for this person is: John Benz. He was on match.com and I feel for the story hook, line and sinker. Alleged widower, from Ireland, civil engineer, who got a contract for Unicef in Cape Town. Had pictures, we talked on the phone, etc. Thought he and the daughter were real.

Then, he had a bag stolen at the airport (while with his daughter) and lost his 2 ipads. I stupidly sent new ones - with shipping a loss of $1500. Got promises to be repaid upon return.

Then a frantic morning phon call about the above-mentioned construction accident. He asked for money to come back to the U.S. since he used his money for a private hospital. I said no.

On the weekend he was set to return to the U.S. I got a text that the flight was delayed due to weather (searched online and it was clear as a bell in Cape Town) and that he would be in touch with new arrangements. Should have known- he would not ever give flight numbers, etc. Didn't hear from him again.

Week or so later got a phone call from a different S.A. number from a man saying he was calling on behalf of "John Benz" and that John had been arrested because of the contruction accident and needed bail money and funds to send his daughter to me (?!?) in the U.S. I again, declined assistance.

Then I found this site and realized that my fears were true. I was scammed. Beware out there! It is unfortunate that my instinct of helping people and believing in the good made me gullible and cost me money and my pride.

I hope this serves as warning for others out there.

I was in touch with a man from match.com , went by the name Stone Peterson. supposedly from the U.K. with an adopted daughter, living in Georgia, went to South Africa for construction job, lost baggage upon arrival, freak construction accident with 1 worker dead, then he started getting death threats and couldn't get out of South Africa. He managed to get some money from me before I finally discovered he was scamming me. tried to tell me airline wouldn't let him fly without having personal traveling allowance. i googled that and found it is pretty much world's biggest dating scam...

I also met a man by the name of Timothy Davidson on september 28 0f 2011 from Hudson Wisconsin on Match.com . He said he was 43 yrs old, no family, other then a son by the name of Alex. He said he was a civil Engineer and at the time he was doing a job in Califonia. Then told me he had a job to fnish up in South Africa, but at the airport in Cape town south africa, he had lost one bag that had his iphone and blackberry and his credit card in it. So he convinced me to purchase those items which i did. And following that there was a freak crane construction accident in Capetown which he said killed 2 people and injured some. They put the contractor (Timothy Davidson) in prison and had no access to any money and in order to pay his bail applicaton and get the job done he needed bail money($3750). SO i had sent bail money to the Detective (Isah Suleman) to get Timothy Davidson out of jail so he could return to his son that was with a nanny in capetown. And to also finish the job he promised so he could "return to me sooner". A lawyer was appointed to him by the name of "John Cole" who i had been in contact with numerous times. Im still in the process of getting more info but would love to hear of anybody in they similar situation. We could exchage pictures phone nubers, names, ect. Please help!!

This is EXACTLY the same thing that happened to me in August with a differently named individual. Please, stop communicating with the so-called "lawyer" as he most certainly is part of the scam, too. If you did wire transfers, etc. inform your bank of the situation and change your account numbers.

These people are diabolical criminals who prey on those with open hearts who believe in the good of people. BTW- the photos they use are just taken from the internet. Models, regular folks, etc.

The hardest part I have found is forgiving myself for falling for this. The financial loss is a challenge and unfortunate, but the emotional of letting myself get taken advantage of is the worst.

Ladies, please, don't send anything to anyone without actually seeing them in person.

All the best.
