Back in the 1960's when I was in the RAN and we came across pirates or gun runners in the south china seas, we sunk them on the spot. We used a junk crewed with Malaysians with RN SBS personal and Aussie divers, they used to get a hell of a shock when they tried to intercept us and received a reception from our 50cal guns. They blow up spectacularly and we never stopped to see if any survived. When we intercepted gun runners, we blew up their boats and transfered the crew to Malaysian navy boats, what happened to them I have no idea.

They are to politically correct these days, those wankers will just go home and re-arm then try again. If you sink them, that's it, over time they run out of people and boats. That's what we found, they didn't handle being sunk. At one stage we were catching one a day. Most the time we were shadowed by a war ship or planes to keep us safe, I remember the day we cruised into a nest of about 4 armed junks of the coast of Borneo and realised we were out gunned. Within a few minutes of us turning away and calling for backup, two buccaneer jets arrived and wiped out 3 whilst the other was run down by HMAS Yarra and collected a 4.5 shell for their trouble.

'War ships'(ships that are armed) have complex restrictions under international maritime law
