That’s a decline of almost 30 million. Since world population is growing, atheists’ share declined to less than one-in-fifty—under 2% in 2012. Doesn't allow for a number of facts.

Many 'atheists' prefer to call ourselves agnostics nowadays to avoid the senseless and pointless discussion about agnosticism versus atheism.

Most people I know (even 'agnostics') seem to be about 6.9ers...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_of_thei...
Over 6 anyway.

And some religions might be gaining ground in China where oppression has decreased, or in Africa where Christian money seems to be sent to persuade the already superstitious ...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/24/us-r...

There are plenty of statistics that indicate that Christianity is declining in developed countries and well-educated populations. I have posted them before but urge people to look for themselves. One can prove anything with statistics but one needs to look at what they really illustrate. I don't think they prove increasing superstition in developed countries.

Just don't try to equate religion with Christianity. Xianity is only one subset of religion.

While I enjoy spending time pointing out the falsity of christianity, I myself would be a 1.01 on that scale...

Study: Atheists Have Lowest 'Retention Rate' Compared to Religious Groups

Only about 30 percent of those who grow up in an atheist household remain atheists as adults. This "retention rate" was the lowest among the 20 separate categories in the study.

There were 1,387 atheists (weighted) in the survey. Four-hundred thirty-two weighted respondents said they were raised atheist. Of those, 131 self-identified as atheist.

Continued:

Gray also noted that, "of those raised as atheists, 30% are now affiliated with a Protestant denomination, 10% are Catholic, 2% are Jewish, 1% are Mormon, and 1% are Pagan."

Jehovah's Witness, congregationalist and holiness churches had the next lowest retention rates at 37 percent, 37 percent and 32 percent, respectively. Thirty-eight percent of those who grew up with no particular religious faith or belief system remained that way.

Hindus had the highest retention rate at 84 percent, followed by Jews (76 percent), Muslims (76 percent), Greek Orthodox (73 percent), Mormons (70 percent) and Catholics (68 percent).

Baptists had the highest retention rate of the Protestant Christian categories at 60 percent, followed by Lutheran (59 percent) and Pentecostal (50 percent).

[Right; NO thinking people don't want to be atheists.]

From: Deseret News / Salt Lake City, UT

July, 2012

“Atheists abandon their beliefs more often than people in other religious groups, study finds”

A new study has found that people raised in an atheist home abandon those beliefs as adults more often than people raised with other religious belief systems, putting atheism at a 30 percent retention rate. Conclusions and interpretations of the study are that atheists are more often "made" as adults rather than "raised." The highest retention rates are in the Hindu faith, which holds onto about 84 percent of adherents.

Those who grow up in an atheist household are least likely to maintain their beliefs about religion as adults, according to a study by Georgetown University's Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA).

Like in the USA, for example?

Non-religious people are hardly accepted there!

In fact, any religion is prefered rather than atheism which is highly suspicious in some parts of the US.

How many confessed atheists get anywhere in business, politics in the States?

Last words of famous atheists:

Caesar Borgia: "While I lived, I provided for everything but death; now I must die, and am unprepared to die."

Thomas Hobbs political philosopher "I say again, if I had the whole world at my disposal, I would give it to live one day. I am about to take a leap into the dark."

Thomas Payne the leading atheistic writer in American colonies: "Stay with me, for God's sake; I cannot bear to be left alone , O Lord, help me! O God, what have I done to suffer so much? What will become of me hereafter? "I would give worlds if I had them, that The Age of Reason had never been published. 0 Lord, help me! Christ, help me!…No, don't leave; stay with me! Send even a child to stay with me; for I am on the edge of Hell here alone. If ever the Devil had an agent, I have been that one."

Sir Thomas Scott, Chancellor of England "Until this moment I thought there was neither a God nor a hell. Now I know and feel that there are both, and I am doomed to perdition by the just judgment of the Almighty."

David Hume, atheist philosopher famous for his philosophy of empiricism and skepticism of religion, he cried loud on his death bed "I am in flames!" It is said his "desperation was a horrible scene".

Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor, and who, like Adolf Hitler, brought death to millions to satisfy his greedy, power-mad, selfish ambitions for world conquest: "I die before my time, and my body will be given back to the earth. Such is the fate of him who has been called the great Napoleon. What an abyss between my deep misery and the eternal kingdom of Christ!”

Sir Francis Newport, the head of an English Atheist club to those gathered around his deathbed: "You need not tell me there is no God for I know there is one, and that I am in His presence! You need not tell me there is no hell. I feel myself already slipping. Wretches, cease your idle talk about there being hope for me! I know I am lost forever! Oh, that fire! Oh, the insufferable pangs of hell!…Oh, that I could lie for a thousand years upon the fire that is never quenched, to purchase the favor of God and be united to Him again. But it is a fruitless wish. Millions and millions of years will bring me no nearer the end of my torments than one poor hour. Oh, eternity, eternity forever and forever!, Oh, the insufferable pangs of Hell!”

Shame on the USA. Still, the USAmericans have overcome prejudice against women, blacks and gays. Lets hope they overcome absurd prejudices against non-believers.

Perhaps Rio and Tzar would like there to be such bigotry here too?....

"...No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.." (Bush41, Snr).

A nation divided between believers and non-believers as well as religious divisions; unelected clerics in our "Lords"; Islamism; a PM who has time for 'faith meetings' and debates on gay marriage but no time for the reform of the House of Lords promised in the manifesto; ID/creationism in our schools where our children are segregated according to their parents religious delusions; etc. That offers no future for a UK. Some religionists would keep us here if they could.
