There was a big emigration of about 300,000 Turkish people between 1987-1989. There was big masses of Turkish people, even in Sofia - where there is no significant Turkish minority - waiting at police stations for passports. In some places in Bulgaria, there was even forced emigration. Emigration ceased in the summer of 1989, when Turkey closed its frontiers for Bulgarian citizens of Turkish nationality.

British Propaganda and the Turks

What a spectacularly invaluable and eye-opening report regarding what was really behind Great Britain's propaganda machinery, Wellington House... and the resulting repercussions still felt today. Thank you, Professor Justin McCarthy, for your always thorough and excellent work.

Language
Bulgarian is the official language and the Cyrillic alphabet is used - Bulgaria is the only EU nation to use it. Turkish and Macedonian are amongst the minority languages. English, German, French and Russian are spoken in major tourist resorts and hotels.

Turkey has over 300 natural and 130 artificial lakes. In terms of numbers of lakes, the Eastern Anatolian region is the richest including Lake Van, (the largest of the country with its 3,713 square kilometres surface), and the lakes of Ercek, Cildir and Hazar. There are also many lakes in the West Taurus Mountains area: the Beysehir and Egirdir lakes, Burdur and Acigoller lakes. The lakes of Sapanca, Iznik, Ulubat, Manyas, Terkos, Kucukcekmece and Buyukcekmece are in Marmara region, and the  second largest lake of Turkey, Tuzgolu and The lakes of Aksehir and Eber are located in the Central Anatolia region. A number of dams have been constructed during the past thirty years, which have resulted in the formation of several large dam lakes including the Atatürk, Keban and Karakaya.

Thermal Springs (Spa)
Turkey is one of the 7 countries in the world in terms of thermal source richness with almost 1300 thermal springs throughout Anatolia. Of course the existence of seismic faults make the country very rich in this aspect. The temperature of these hot springs varies between 20-110 degrees Celsius (68-230 Fahrenheit), and their flow is between 2-500 liters per second. Turkey is using only a small percentage of the country's potential in terms of mineral springs, but today the Ministry of Tourism and private investors are contributing more to Turkey's map of spa tourism.
