As is well known the name Istanbul comes the the Greek phrase "Is Tin Poli" which simply means "In The City". There is nothing Turkish about that name.

Other cities in Turkey with curupted forms of the original Greek names are:

Smirni-Izmir
Vurla-Urla
Pergamos-Bergama
Prusa-Bursa
Artaki-Erdek
Panormos-Bandirma
Adramytion-Edermit
Irakleia-Eregli
Kerasunta-Giresun
Kastamoni-Kastamonu
Trapezunta-Trabzon
Sevasteia-Sivas
Ikonio-Konya
Attalia-Antalya
Ionoupolis-Inebolu
Sampsunta-Samsun
Amaseia-Amasya

and of course the name Anatolia is from the Greek word Anatoli. Anatolia means "Eastern Land" in Greek.

The city of Byzantium (now called Istanbul) was founded by Greek colonists from Megara (near Athens) in 657 B.C. It was renamed Nea Romi (New Rome) when Emperor Constantine moved the capital from Rome in Italy to the Greek city of Byzantium. It was later named Constantinople (Konstantinoupolis) City of Constantine in honor of the Emperor. Constantinople remained the capital of the Greek speaking Empire for over a thousand. It was the largest and richest city in Europe. In 1204 the city was sacked by the Crusaders and never regained its wealth. It's population fell from 500,000 to only 50,000.

In 1453 the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet attacked the city with nearly 200,000 troops which consisted of Jannisaries, merceneries and Turks. The city was only defended by 7,000 Greeks and Venetians yet it took the Turks several months to take the city. The Turks of course looted the city, murdered or enslaved a large part of the population.

On Sept. 5th and 6th of 1955 the Turks conducted anti-Greek riots in Istanbul. In two days of violence the Turks destroyed 4214 homes, 1004 businesses, 73 churches, 2 monasteries, 1 synagogue, and 26 schools. Over 4,000 Greek-owned businesses, 110 hotels, 27 pharmacies, 23 schools, 21 factories, 73 Greek (and other Christian) churches and over a thousand Greek-owned homes were badly damaged or destroyed.

today because of intense persecution the Greek population of Istanbul which was protected by the Treaty of Lausanne is down from nearly 200,000 in 1922 to only about 4,000 mostly elderly.

Adana is located at the northeastern edge of the Mediterranean, where it serves as the gateway to the Çukurova plain, which has historically been known in the West as the Cilicia plain. This large stretch of flat, fertile land lies southeast of the Taurus Mountains.

From Adana, crossing the Çukurova westwards, the road from Tarsus enters the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. The temperature decreases with every foot of ascent, as the road reaches an altitude of nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 m). It goes through the famous Cilician Gates, the rocky pass through which armies have coursed since the dawn of history, and continues to the Anatolian plain.

The north of the city is surrounded by the Seyhan reservoir and HEP, which was completed in 1956. The dam was constructed for hydroelectric power (HEP)$ to irrigate the lower Çukurova plain. Two irrigation channels in the city flow to the plain, passing through the city center from east to west. There is another canal for irigating the Yüregir plain to the southeast of the city.
