We are talking about the times before the Bulgars came to the Balkans.Anothier thing you have to consider is the location of the original Bulgar state,which indicates the actual settlements of the Bulgars.I'll show you a map of the the first Bulgar state and you can compare with the modern map of Bulgaria.

For you maybe,because you are newer Americans but for the ones who have been here since Mayflower times it gets much more complicated to figure out their origins.Many of them have completely forgotten where their ancestors came from.
