Based on historical data, another example for the existence of Turk elements in Anatolia before Seljuk era is Turk Pecheneg, Uz, Kuman and Bulgar populations settled to Anatolia in Byzantine era.
When Seljuks and Ottomans expanded to West, they came across with these Turks.Western sources mention about Uz (Oghuz), Pecheneg (Becene, one of 24 Oghuz tribes) as an important group in Roman Emperor Diojen's army of 200.000 soldiers which fought against Alpaslan.
Seljuk sources say, "these Uz (Oghuz) and Pecheneg (Becene, one of 24 Oghuz tribes) switched sides when they came across with their Turkic cognates".This was an important factor for the victory of Manzikert in 1071.
It is also known that Romans settled Turk tribes to Mugla, Manisa, Tarsus, Misis, Antakya, Adana and Kilikia regions.
It is also known that Byzantine Emperor Aleksi Kommenos settled many TURK beyliks to Manisa.Besides that, many Byzantine Emperors settled Turks to Anatolia from different tribes such as BULGARS, KHAZARS, AVARS, PECHENEGS, KUMANS and UZ.
300 year long Arab-Byzantine wars caused poverty and prevented agriculture and trade which was the primary sources of living for the local population.
As a result of this and the Mongol invasion, local population considered migration and evacuating their region as a solution.Anatolia became more deserted.Thats why Oghuz Turks and the rest of Turkic tribes who arrived to Anatolia in various migration waves didnt face with serious resistance and became the majority in time.
Thats why Byzantine armies literaly watched as Oghuz Turks arrived and the local populations that formed Byzantine armies started to migrate to West and South when they faced the military superiority of Oghuz Turks.
Byzantine sent the local populations to other regions and especialy the Greek (Rum) population systematicaly to Izmit, Istanbul and Therace (Trakya).
The ethnic structure of Anatolia was not homogeneous when Oghuz Turks arrived to Anatolia. The populations that resisted to them were Armenians, Greeks (Rum) and Assyrians under Byzantine command.
Thats why today the propaganda of "today's Turkish population are converts and Turkified Greeks (Rums) and other elements of Anatolia" theory is a big mistake and historicaly and scientificaly incorrect.
Because, Greek (Rum) population rapidly pulled back from Anatolia and the minorities that took shelter in Seljuk Empire did not mix with the Turks. The eye witness of this fact is the Arab traveller Ibn-i Batuta.Ibn-i Batuta gave spesific information about the local populations in Anatolia.

He wrote, in the cities he visited Turks, Armenians, Greeks (Rum) and Jews were living in seperate neighbourhoods and the Greek (Rum) population was not high.Anatolian populations didnt represent a unity, Greeks (Rum) were a small minority living in cities and there was a constant struggle between Greeks (Rum) and Armenians.Evliya Chelebi made similar observations. Also having different religions was another element that prevented mixture between Oghuz Turks and the other ethnic groups.
Alevis that belong to an important part of Turks since 13rd century did not get married with different ethnic groups for 700 years because of their beliefs.Considering the fact that the condition for being an Alevi is to be born to an Alevi family, it can be said that Turks are the least mixed ethnic group in Anatolia.Nusayris (Alawites) with Turkmen origin, didnt get married with different ethnic groups for 1100 years.
Therefore, the propaganda of the west and certain anti-Turkish elements is a deliberate act to weaken national identity and divide the Turkish Republic based on ethnicity.
Sir William Ramsey wrote another reality about the Greek (Rum) identity.
"Anatolian Greek (Rum) identity is a concept based on RELIGION.IT IS NOT DIRECTLY A NATION.Greeks managed to come together because of Orthodox Church.THERE IS NOT A GREEK (RUM) IDENTITY IN TERMS OF A NATION IN ANATOLIA."
The Greek identity of Anatolian Rums became more controversial with the findings of Prof Manfred Krofman's archeological works in Troy in 1998.The results clearly showed Trojans were not Greeks and their language was Luvian (an Anatolian language). Also it is interesting that one of the tribes that lived in Troy was called TURGIS.
