DIYARBAKIR—A group of Armenians, raised as Sunni Muslims because their ancestors converted to Islam after the Armenian Genocide, were reportedly baptized Monday at the newly re-opened Surp Giragos Church, reported Hurriyet Daily News.

“I wish this church had always been open,” Gaffur Türkay, one of the group to be baptized, who also contributed to the restoration of the church, told Hurriyet.“It is unbelievable to be together here with people from all around the world with whom I share the same origins.”

Istanbul’s Deputy Patriarch Aram Ateshian was scheduled to officiate at the baptismal ceremony, which was held behind closed doors and was not open to the press. The newspaper reported that the names of those baptized would not be publicized due to security concerns.

Hurriyet also caught of with Turkish-born Archbishop Vicken Ayvazian, who was representing the Eastern US Diocese of the Armenian Church.

“We used to have over 2,600 churches and monasteries across Anatolia in the past. Unfortunately, only a handful of sanctuaries remain. My request from Turkey as a spiritual leader is for churches to be returned to the [Armenian] community, rather than reopening them for religious service as museums,” Archbishop Ayvazian told Hürriyet.

He also told Hurriyet that “there was a Genocide,” saying an acknowledgement of the fact can be a step toward the right direction.

Used as a command center for German officers during the First World War, the church was then used as an apparel depot by the state-owned Sümerbank until 1950. The church was then handed back to the Armenian community, following a long legal battle, reported Hurriyet.

"Kurdish members of parliament announce boycott of Turkish parliament"...Does Erdogan believe that domestic problems will go away if he criticizes Assad?
Or with empty idiotic threats to Israel, Cyprus and Greece?

The reason that Turkey got to this point of democracy was because Kemal Ataturk took Islam out of the equation.
Never forget that.

Both Talat and K. Ataturk were instrumental in implementing the part pogrom of the Young Turk Party<Ittihad ve Terrakki>, the so-called party of Union and Progress. The party was formed in 1908 on the slogan of equality and fraternity but by the dawn of WWI it was transformed into a racist terror network ultimately becoming the undisputed government of Turkey and became bent on creating a "Turkey for the Turks.? The first step involved the extermination of the indigenous people of the region that traditionally followed the Christian faith-Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians-through the clever use of Islam and collaborator muftis and hodjas to incite hatred among their beleaguered Turks who owed their misfortunes to this ruling Young Turk Party. Backroom deals sealed with the German government dragged Ottoman Turkey into WWI. The second phase was implemented during the dictatorship of General Kemal Ataturk, and it involved the slow-motion genocide of the proud Kurdish nation (soon after 'the Republic of Turkey" was formed the Kurds officially became "mountain Turks" and began active revolts, 26 in all with the PKK rebellion as the most recent)

My grandparents were both Armenian orphans from the Armenian town of Van.
Armenians were outnumbered by 20 million Ottoman Turks vs. barely 3 million Armenians.

How about the brave Turkish Journalists that dare speak out that are thrown into jail or taken to court under Article 301? Orhan Pamuk (Noble Prize winner) Taner Akcam or Fethiye Cetin, an attorney who discovered her beloved grandmother was an Armenian orphan.

The 3 pashas ordered the death of the Armenians, they were later found GUILTY of war crimes by the Turkish Military courts. But the cowards fled Turkey and no face the truth.

Today 22 countries recognize the Armenian Genocide as historical fact. 46 states within the USA have proclamations recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

Then the Turkish propaganda with their “lets play victim by blaming the victim” recently in the last 5 years starts to spread news about Turks being killed by Armenians.

The numbers and the historical data do not support this myth of the Turks who struggle every day with cleaning up their horrid history of the Ottoman Caliphate. The Ottoman Sword was known by 70% of Europe and 80% of the Middle East.

Europe doesn’t want Turkey, Russia will never trust Turkey, even your moslem brothers in the Middle east don’t trust Turkey and your only trusted trading partner —>Israel is DONE with Turkey and their anti-semantic behavior and protests.

I can now understand why Hitler’s Mein Kampf translated in Turkey is among the most read book in modern Turkey.

Currently there is a military coup, police conspiracy and media control all perpatrated by the real leader of Turkey.

I am talking about Fethullah Gulen.

There is no question the Armenian genocide has taken place. I'm sorry if it hurts Turkish nationalist sensitivities and pride or the image of Turkey itself, but the fact is that millions of people got killed.
In an organized Genocide.

Eventually, the Turkish and the Turkish people, will get over the fact. Turks are already having more liberal (non-nationalist propaganda inspired) views when it comes to it in Turkey.

Always have in mind that many of today's Turkish population, are in fact Armenians who covered their ancestry, their original backround and religion, or tried all they could to stay alive....

If the Turks can send their ships to threaten Israeli shipping then Israel reserves the right to sink them.
All legal.
Erdogan should know that it will be Turkey who will be the loser just as the Ottomans lost in the past due to their stupidity.
Will they?
Seems like a repetition of the past.

Armenian FM slams Davutoglu statement as Turkey’s continued Genocide denial.

Armenian authorities have repeatedly stated that the fact of the Armenian Genocide and the importance of its international recognition and condemnation have never been, nor can ever be, called into question, said Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan while visiting the Hague in the Netherlands.

In an interview with the low countries’ prestigious periodical, Dutch De Volkskrant, Nalbandyan (who is on a European tour Nov. 21-26, with planned stops also including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Belgium and Lithuania), in particular, slammed Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu for his recent statement on the establishment of a committee of historians to look into the “1915 events” made while his meeting with his French counterpart. Nalbandyan called the statement an attempt to compromise the position of France and other states and international organizations on Genocide recognition.

Davutoglu held a meeting with Alain Juppe in Ankara on November 18. The statements in question were made at a joint press conference following that meeting.

“It is nothing else but continuation of a dangerous denial policy, about which French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a clear statement in Armenia,” Nalbandyan added, according to his press office.

Regarding the Turkish minister’s claims that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s letter addressed to the former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan was left unanswered in 2005, Nalbandyan said that Kocharyan’s answer was sent and published on April 25, 2005.

“Both the international community and Turkey – perhaps with the exception of a few people as it can be concluded from Ahmet Davutoglu’s statement – are well aware of the contents of that answer,” Nalbandyan concluded.

In that response Kocharyan rejected Turkey’s offer of a joint academic study on the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire that the Turkish government denies constituted genocide.

Erdogan wrote to Kocharian earlier, suggesting that a commission of Turkish and Armenian historians examine the events of 1915-1918 and determine if they indeed amounted to genocide.

And the clue here would be "it happened right after Genocide", so it is more likely a forced conversion. Only thing that happens to be news worthy in this story other than the need for churches, the author may of purposely tried to avoid implying.

Recovery of Armenia and saving the Kurds from another genocide is the duty of the Western civilization.
The Armenian Genocide is not just an Armenian issue.
It is a key issue relevant to the European civilization and its values.
That civilization will not be permitted to be undermined by Turkish state terrorism or Genocide Denialism.
Turkey or any other state taking such a position will be dismantled.

The Turkish republic is legally the successor state to the Ottoman state. It is entirely responsible for the Genocide.

The time factor has no relevance in International Law (this relates to state responsibility and not the criminals who are all dead now of course).

Genocide denialism must be halted. There is no place for such international criminality.

Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan’s position on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is correct.

Armenia should categorically reject any proposition to “study” an historical fact.

The bottom line is that the Turkish government must take responsibility of its past crimes against humanity.

Turkey must pay reparations to Armenians and return the Armenian homeland to its rightful owners.

All nations should stop politicizing the Armenian Genocide issue and instead pla

Turkey in its ongoing shameful denial of Armenian ‎Genocide- Almost in the same way as German Reich was actively involved in Armenian ‎Genocide…

Denial , or belittlement of a Genocide is nothing but a second killing!

Every ‎person with an healthy mind would understand that Turkish current denial policy is the ‎continuation of the genocide of 1915 itself.

The rest is game of words ‎just in the sprit of criminal Turkey!

A genocide was committed and those who were eye-witnesses to these events are almost all gone.

Turkey would like the truth to die with them but we can’t let that happen.

The lie must be challenged whenever it raises its head and truth-loving people everywhere should shine the light on it.

There is no ‘disagreement’ about the Armenian genocide other than the ‘disagreement’ by Turkey to accept the truth.

They created the "disagreement" and also foster the very few academics who are willing to collude with them in their ‘disagreement’ of the truth.

A truth that Ottoman Turks acknowledged in Courts Martial immediately after the Genocide but developed amnesia for when Kemal Ataturk ‘modernized’{fabricated a new history for} the Turkish Republic.

If a Turk can be proud of systematic mass killing of Armenians- this is The Armenian Genocide - how comes that at the same time this becomes a crime for a Turk , if he acknowledges the killing of 1 Million Armenians?

This is the official denial of Turkish government itself biased on "Turkishness".

I hope he will apply to the European court for human right against this verdict!

As everybody can see Erdogan´s AKP is replacing the old criminal and nationalist-fascist Ergenekon gang with a new one, this would be an islamo-fascist Ergenekon gang.

This is called "Turkish reforms"
