The 0ttoman Dynasty ruled the 0ttoman Empire from 1299 to 1922, beginning with 0sman.

The sultan was the sole & absolute regent, head of state & head of government of the empire.

0sman (1259-1326)
The founder of the 0ttoman Empire, 0sman succeeded his father to a small territory granted by the Seljuk Turks. He followed the Gazi tradition, expanding & enriching his empire.

Murat I (1319-1389)
Succeeded his father as ruler of the 0ttoman Empire in 1359, Murat I captured Thrace in 1363 & by 1369, he had conquered Bulgaria, Macedonia, & Serbia. He died at the battle of Kosovo in 1389. Murat I reorganized the janissaries into a standing paid army in the service of the sultan. He was succeeded by his son, Yildirim Bayezid.

Murat II (1403-1451)
Succeeded his father, Mehmet I, in 1421. Murat II continued the expansionist policy of the 0ttomans, capturing Salonika & embarking on a series of campaigns against Hungary. He crushed a Christian army at Varna later in the same year, defeating the combined forces of Hungary, Serbia, & Bosnia at Kosovo in 1448, reacquiring control of Serbia.

Mehmed II (The Conqueror)(1451-1481)
Was Sultan of the 0ttoman Empire for a short time from 1444 to September 1446 & later from February 1451 to 1481. At the age of 21, he conquered Constantinople, bringing an end to the medieval Byzantine Empire.

Suleiman I (The Magnificent)(1520-1566)
Was the 10th & longest-reigning Sultan of the 0ttoman Empire, from 1520 to his death in 1566. Suleyman the Magnificent has been known as one of the greatest rulers of the 0ttoman Empire. He is known in the West as Suleiman the Magnificent & in the East, as the Lawgiver, for his complete reconstruction of the 0ttoman legal system. Suleiman became the pre-eminent monarch of 16th century Europe, presiding over the apex of the 0ttoman Empire's military, political & economic power. Suleiman personally led 0ttoman armies to conquer the Christian strongholds of Belgrade, Rhodes, & most of Hungary before his conquests were checked at the Siege of Vienna in 1529. He annexed most of the Middle East in his conflict with the Persians & large swaths of North Africa as far west as Algeria. Under his rule, the 0ttoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea & the Persian Gulf. At the helm of an expanding empire, Suleyman personally instituted legislative changes relating to society, education, taxation, & criminal law. His canonical law fixed the form of the empire for centuries after his death. Not only was Suleyman a distinguished poet & goldsmith in his own right; he also became a great patron of culture, overseeing the golden age of the 0ttoman Empire's artistic, literary & architectural development. In Middle Eastern cultures he is often referred to as a great builder.
