Talk about stumbling onto a DAMNING document?? I was reading a fine thesis written by 'Opeti Taliai to learn more about 'Aho'eitu and came across some VERY interesting passages on pages 122-25 ...

http://mro.massey.ac.nz/bitstream/handle/1017...

Page 122-23
"This replacement is not new of course. One can see that the traditional advisory body for the King of Tonga has always been filled by some foreign group of migrants. For example, in the Tu'i Tonga 'Aho'eitu reign, the Falefaa was made up of Samoan men, in the Tu'i Ha'atakalaua office, of Fijian, Rotuman, and Samoan men. And, now, in the time of Taufa'aahau, statesmen, disguised as the London missionaries, adviced George Taufa'aahau Tupou I on how to protect him under the human right rules and the British Parliament model of government."

"I argue, in the case of George Taufa'aahau Tupou I, than an advisory council of London missionaries is thus an establishment of some kind of leeway controlling mechanism over the local people and the land. It does immediately open the door to this new British political system disguised as a Christian religion to walk inside and immediately assume the administrative role of conducting the internal affairs of Tonga."

Page 124
"Again, my critique of this outside political intervention in terms of advice reveals the nonsensicality of the Tongan myth of independence which says that only Tonga in the Pacific was never colonised, even by the Europeans. History states that Tonga has ALWAYS been colonised, even way back in time, for example, by Samoa and Fiji and, of course, of these two by Tonga. But, on the part of the missionaries, their colonisation has been a clever ruse to concea the colonising effect of their engagement in the writing of the 1875 Tongan Constitution from being seen as altogether a wrongdoing of plagiarism. "

Page 125
",modern Christian Tu'i Kanokupolu rule can still be seen to be practicing the Tu'i Tonga style of opressing the people as by commandeering their resources. In a twisting way of trying to conceal the obvious colonization of Tonga by the British Empire, Reverand Wood cleverly presented this method with the question- are the intermittent wars in Tongatapu civil or wars of religion between the Methodist and Catholic?"

See what I meant by damning?? LOL... Now, let's recap what has just been exposed:

1) Tonga was indeed colonised by Fiji and Samoa.

2) Tonga was indeed colonised by Great Britain, just not on paper.

The lesson here is that the notion of Tonga never being colonised, by Europeans or otherwise, is a joke. A fantasy. A prideful fairytale. You get the picture. And this is all coming from the mouth of a fellow Tongan - Taliai. Who would of known?? My hope is that a) the childish bragging will cease, and b) everyone in here learn to ALWAYS question what they've been told. That's the essence of Helu's school,'Atenisi, where Taliai was partly educated. Tongans everywhere should know the truth. But they shouldn't be ashamed though. The British government back then were some sneaky a$$holes. They definitely fcked the Maori over here in NZ using the same type of 'trickery'. I can't see how the Maori or Tongans or Fijians or Indians or Native Americans could've avoided it. So there shouldn't be any shame at all. The main point is that Tonga is no longer under the British.

A few Fijians and Samoans taking up residence in Tonga is not a colonisation. Tonga may have been influenced by Britain but its too big a stretch to say it was colonized. Tongan sovereignty has always been in Tongan hands.

1) He's referring to the Tu'i Pulotu and Tui Manu'a having control and influence over Tonga. Isn't that the essence of colonisation??

2) Britain also had control and influence over Tonga. The only difference was that it was under the table. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Tupou was a puppet, even though I doubt he knew what was happening.

The usual denial from Mrs. Rabies. The only reason it wasn't on paper was because Tonga had a constitution. This meant that Britain couldn't LEGALLY colonise Tonga. But did that stop it from calling the shots behind closed doors?? Nope. Jewel of the Pacific my ass. The British had your King on a leash and he probably didn't know it. How sad is that?? You're right about history being what it is. And it's right there in fine print for all to see. Enjoy! LOL...

You're not saying he's wrong yet still insist that Tonga was never colonised?? Yeah, that makes sense (cough). As for Napoleon, I did read somewhere that your early ancestors trued to make out that he was half Tongan from his father but I didn't hear anything about 'Atenisi teaching that as fact. If so, I would like to see it. Would be funny to see :)
