http://thaipoliticalprisoners.wordpress.com/ New: Inside the censor’s den There’s a really interesting story in the Bangkok Post’s Database section (30 September 2009:“What is praise worth when criticism is forbidden?”) that we recommend to PPT readers. The author visits and talks with kids at an international school on a number of topics. It gets especially interesting for PPT when the discussion turns to “the whys and wherefores of what happens when cyberspace meets the ancients in their traditional Thai silk dresses and carbon-intensive piles of paperwork and what they had to say was eye-opening…”. These 18 year-old kids “had recently returned from their national service army training.” Some of them were taken to a “computer lab where they were told to search the Internet for sites that violated the monarchy and should be censored.” This was “a secret room in an army training camp where, as part of their military training, they had to scour the Internet for sites and comments in English that had to be censored…. The room itself was full of posters of His Majesty doing good things, as if to encourage the workers on with their task of defending the Crown. The system had a database with a hard-coded local IP address where entries for sites, forum postings and media such as YouTube clips were listed. Each page had 20 entries and the database was over 100 pages long.” The reporter says he ” tried being cheeky. I asked what we had to do if they said bad things about government. The government isn’t the King, right? The Sergeant said that this Government is representing the King and if you insult the government, you are indirectly insulting the King, the first kid told me.” The army was “compiling a list for forwarding to the MICT to submit to the courts for a court order to block them. However, my young friends had thought of that and told me that some of the links on the database had already been blocked, some as fresh as two days old, which would not have been enough time to go through the official procedure of getting a court order to censor the site.” The kids were apparently “ambivalent about the need for censorship.” They seemed to think that sites that “present a credible argument need to be shown and we need to balance our reasons as to why we love the King. If you censor it, we can’t defend it, one said.” At the same time these kids seemed concerned about “who decides on what is right? Whether this website is destructive or whatever?” They worried about the “whole idea of a big brother government…”. An interesting insight into the work of army censors and their mindset and the way young people think about censorship. As these kids have matured during the period of the most intense royal propaganda, their views are worthy of consideration.

The problem it is because this kind of news will be read by us and ignored in Thailand (little spread and very few persons understands English)
Which courage on behalf of the journalist and of the newspaper. Keep on

$35 billion dollar at work. Plus how many more from the Jek yellow turds in Bangkok. The army Generals are happy getting paid.
When the payment stops. They might be a little itchy.

I enjoy the Post and Nation, when i am there but, you can tell that it's not a free press, especially when they treated the takeover of the airport too lightly....

Taking over of airports will give you death penalty. It's international law. Only in Thailand the robber Abhisit Vejjajiva will protect terrorists (yellow shirts) because they're the same gang. And Sondhi Limthongkul yellow shirt leader is keeping some secrets of Abhisit Vejjajiva (either having mia noi or dirty plans agreed when bringing people to rally with yellow shirts). Abhisit now treats Sondhi like a boss & will do everything to keep Sondhi happy.
