Catholic bishop decries ritual female genital mutilation

Bishop Michael Mabuga Msonganzila of Tanzania condemned the widespread of female genital mutilation in his region of Africa and asked at the recent synod of Africa bishops at Rome for alternative rituals for girls to mark their passage into womanhood.

The Catholic Church already has a ritual for coming of age - it's called the Sacrament of Confirmation. I hope the bishops will consider using this, and maybe prepare and confirm boys and girls separately. Traditionally Confirmation was done in the early teen years, but has been given to younger children in the last few decades. This has taken away an opportunity to support and strengthen girls and boys at an important stage of their lives.
