"Earthquake McGoon" was not the first American to die in Vietnam; there were several ahead of him the honor of first KIA and first MIA goes to Colonel Peter Dewey. He was in WWII's OSS, the forerunner of the CIA, and at the end of the war he was in Vietnam. The time was confusing, with still-armed Japanese soldiers trying to find a way home, British troops shooting Vietnamese rioters, and the French wanting their colony back. Dewey spoke French and possibly was mistaken for a Frenchman when he was killed and his body taken by the Viet Minh in October, 1945. His driver, who was wounded, survived the ambush and reported the incident.
Neither McGovern nor Dewey are on the Wall; the official casualties of the war did not start until 1959. |
