GENEVA, July 1 (Reuters)- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called on Tuesday for an end to indiscriminate attacks in Sri Lanka which it said killed at least 80 civilians in the past three months.
The neutral humanitarian agency also cited allegations that civilians have been killed, beaten, arrested or simply went missing after being "directly targeted" in the island nation, where 70,000 people have died since a civil war began in 1983.
At least 80 people "lost their lives in indiscriminate attacks on public transport and crowded public places" since April 1, the ICRC said in a statement reminding all sides of the conflict that international law prohibits attacks on civilians.

Ayubowan, vanakkam, assalamu alaikkum and best wishes as we move into July – marking the 25th anniversary of the 1983 Black-July holocaust -- with little sign of any silver lining in the clouds of gloom or doom.

The state of achcharu or kaivaru politics with its multi faceted with its conflicts within conflicts and confusion within confusion continue. The issue dominating the headlines is of the role that big brother India is playing or wants to play in Sri Lanka’s crisis apparently to bolster India’s position as the regional superpower, with various geo-political objectives. As in many other issues, conflicting and contradictory reports are still being published or being leaked on matters relating to the visit by India’s powerful National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan, Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh.

One Sunday newspaper flashed a front page lead saying Sri Lanka had agreed to a high profile military presence including troops, helicopter gun-ships and battle-ships during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit for the South Asian summit in Colombo later this month. The independent Sunday Times newspaper also gave some startling disclosures regarding the visit by India’s three top officials. The report headlined Secrets behind the secret Indian visit said the reverberations from this visit were still continuing at the highest levels of the Sri Lankan government.

According to this report, the Indian officials did not demand that the war against the LTTE be stopped, as claimed in many sections of the media. President Mahinda Rajapaksa himself denied that any such demands had been made by India.

A9 gateway to Vanni closed after SLAF attack

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) Tuesday evening informed the Government Agent (GA) of Ki'linochchi, N. Vethanayagam, that it has decided to withdrew its personnel from manning the A9 post in Pu'liyangku'lam after Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombers attacked a locality close to the gateway at 3:40 p.m., the GA told TamilNet. Four bombers attacked the location twice, endangering the lives of the civilians and the personnel manning the gateway.

The SLAF air strike, which comes 4 days after the SLA had shelled the gateway.

Following the closure of the gateway, all transportation including civilian transportation and humanitarian supplies have come to a halt.

The people’s participation in government through the exercise of their franchise seems to have become a farce and a failure in Sri Lanka with dictatorial powers vested in one person by the flawed constitution.

In terms of this constitution once a person becomes president by hook or by crook, he could lead the country to disaster unchallenged, with the help of those ‘elected’ by the people, but have since become traitors and turn coats. These persons were elected to power by voters who voted for the policies of their party.

After being elected these people pole vaulting to parties whose policies their own voters rejected is a classic case of prostituting the franchise expressed by the people for self gain, like the way pimps tout twilight ladies engaged in the world’s oldest profession.
